Watching Games at UT Austin
This is to anyone who goes or went to UT Austin recently enough to remember how they watched Rockets games here.
I am a freshman here this fall, and I'm wondering how it works to watch Rockets games.
I know that I can go to Pluckers or a sports bar and they can turn on the game, but that's obviously way too expensive to do on a regular basis.
I know that I can always catch the nationally televised games with UT Austin cable in my dorm.
What about the other games? Do they usually show Spurs games on FSN Southwest?
How does that work?

Re: Watching Games at UT Austin
this is my experiment (my mom wont give me a TV)
freshmen - i live in Dobie (free cable), that tall building on MLK
they have a big screen TV on their theater room (need reservation)
i usually reserved them to watch Rockets on TNT or TBS (too much trouble)
this is 1996 they don't have FSN or NBATV yet
then i get to know some people living in Dobie that have TV and like basketball
Jester actually has a TV in the hallway as well
lots of people watch sports there (or you can go to Gregory)
sophomore - live in apartment, cable is too expensive for me to pay for myself
my roommate doesn't like sports, so can't get him to pay the other half
junior&senior - excellent, living in 2-2 big apartment with 3 other people
we got CABLE!!!! all 3 like basketball, all Rockets fans (except one, he's from Dallas)
our apartment is so big we got friends coming over to watch all the time
i can't believe the rent for that 2-2 is $700/month back then
now remember that FSN in Austin don't show Houston sports games
DirectTV and NBA League Pass is too expensive for student (unless your parents are rich)
i got a decent paying job
i still think it's too expensive to get
regular DirectTV doesn't let you get the league pass
you need to pay extra for some sport package (total like $80/month)
i need to call and ask again this year (since i don't think there will be anymore mms link this season)
ps
if i did get the package and you don't mind driving 20min to my place
you can come and watch

Re: Watching Games at UT Austin
I lived in Simkins and we got free cable with the room so I brought my 10 year old 25 inch tv and watched nationally televised game or local tv when the Rockets played the Spurs. Sometimes Rockets fans would take over the tv room, but usually that was reserved for losers who actually had a PS2 or XBOX to play.
As a sophmore I moved over to west campus and we paid for cable internet, but no one wanted to spend on tv. The only time I watched a Rockets game was if I was at a friend's place or at home. A non college student friend decided to come live in Austin with us during the spring.
After that we moved to Riverside and another non college student came to live with us who happened to be a sports fan so we all paid for cable in one of our apartments. We were still limited largley to nationally broadcasted games. The next year we got digital cable and a lot more channels so we got to watch more games.
Now I have a friend who orders league pass and sunday ticket every season so I just mooch off of him, and he happens to be a Rockets fan.

If you like Max, I can bring some girls over, though you're probably 10+ years older than all of them.

as long as they are at least 18 and you can @#$% them for free you really think people would care about the age difference?

Lol uhhh...
Just get NBA League Pass. I lived in Jester last year, and I live in West Campus this year...there's nothing you can do aside from getting LP.

I wonder that as well. You can't just get NBALP with basic cable. At least I don't think you can.

I'm not sure. I think I have Time Warner because I live in an apartment. I'm sure there's a way to do it. Just ask your dorm who the cable provider is, call them, and find out how you can get billed for it.

Re: Watching Games at UT Austin
Look like you can buy NBA LP Broadband alone this year for $85 before 11/11. Exactly what I'm looking for. Now I can watch at work when we play those east coast team. Of course games showed on TNT/ESPN/NBA TV/Local TV will be blackout. Not a good choice if you live in Houston. This is perfect for those living outside of Houston. BTW games are free till 11/11.
