Mcdyess is about to become a free agent. He's a veteran, solid defensively, a good rebounder, and can occasionally put points on the board if you need him to. I don't know how much money he's asking for, but I think he'd be a great fit. Thoughts?

Im sure we are on the 17 teams that have inquired about him, but my guess is he goes with the C's.

Agree w/the King. Definite fit for a clear need. Everyone focuses on his D and rebounding,but he also has a decent jumper.
Only catch is he gave up some $8mil over 2 yrs,so he prob wants that back. (There was an article at time of trade that mentioned Rockets had some $4+mil available for a free Agent. Don't know if true,but if Landry was signed w/out using MLE money and Dempsey and Wafer were,the numbers given would be @ right. Of course the writer could have mistakenly added the Rockets TE and the amount of MLE left after using it on Landry. Sure would be interesting to know.)
If the Rockets did have the cap room to sign him,they'd blow past any hope of being under Lux Tax,so I think it unlikely.
But if they did,they could now put together a pretty attractive package for a deadline deal. Scola-whose minutes are being yanked-or Landry w/Francis and Head expiring contracts could get a pretty decent player. Just a thought.

Yeah, I'd rather have Mutombo if we have the money to spend. McDyess is a great player, I love him, but he isn't any more capable of playing center than Landry or Scola.

McDyess has had more minutes at the center position than both Landry and Scola have ever had. Dice is also the best defender and the best rebounder among the three. He's certainly more capable to play the position than the two.

I am sure I brought this up in the Chris Mihm thread. Unfortunately I don't think he is going to play in the West unless its for the Lakers. I think he will end up in Boston or Cleveland.

Depends on how his work ethic/ego is. If he wants to just relax and get a ring, go to the Celtics. If he wants to be a valuable piece to a championship team, he comes to us. He might even go back to the Pistons, considering how bad the housing market is, since he probably hasn't sold his home in Detroit. And if he's greedy then he'll go where he's paid the most. We don't know how he is from a personal standpoint so who knows.

I would love for us to pick him up. Isn't he like from Houston or something like that? He would fit perfect in Adelman's system and backing up Yao. As I recalled he started at center for the Pistons when the traded Wallace last season. But I doubt he comes to us. I still think he will go back to the Pistons.

Eh? They haven't been so far, is this upcoming for some reason?

He'd be great, a definite better option at C than Hayes (or even Yao, lol...joke), but I doubt we have any chance to land him, there are better teams with less depth vying to sign him.

Doubt he'd come to a loser team when he has so many other good choices.

With his current health and stature no... Hell No... We need a real 6'11, 7-0 or bigger to back up Yao.. none of this BS..

If Dwight Howard had Scola's minutes he'd only be averaging 9.84. I'll take a pf who's only averaging 2.25rpg less than the NBA's "best rebounder". (don't know who the rebound rate leaders are)

He's better than Yao at 6.46 at any rate. Still hoping Chuck Hayes hasn't dropped off as bad as it looks. Probably just a stats glitch.

Well oops. Somebody (me) hasn't been paying attention. Completely forgot who the OP was, slipped into assuming it was one of a few of the normal every-day trade proposers, and got impatient. My bad! Being hammered at work lately obviously hasn't helped my posting any (I still don't see the point in dyess, though.)

The Rockets have shown little urgency to add more size. Mutombo said in September he had been told the Rockets would have to trim salaries before he would be signed, but that he had decided he wanted to complete his career in Houston. Rockets general manager Daryl Morey confirmed that plan a week later, but he and Adelman said then that the Rockets were confident about using their power forwards as backup centers.

In many ways, the plan mirrors last season. Though Mutombo was on the roster throughout the season, he did not play in 41 of the first 55 games. In the 14 games he did play before Yao’s injury, he averaged just 8.1 minutes, 2.4 rebounds. .29 blocked shots and .5 points.

Last season, the Rockets actually outscored opponents by 2.5 points per 48 minutes more when playing without a 7-footer than when compared to playing with Yao or Mutombo. Those results were helped by playing small more often against backups, while Yao or Mutombo more often played against opposing starters. But it does offer an explanation for the Rockets’ patience in adding a big man.
