On his support for Yao and McGrady:
After 25 games of injuries, rapidly changing lineups and wildly inconsistent results on the court, the thinking of the Rockets’ owner has remained constant.

Determined after last season and heading into this season to build around the Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady foundation, owner Leslie Alexander said Wednesday he remains committed to the plan.

“I am committed to them being healthy and building a team around Yao and Tracy,” Alexander said. “Nothing’s changed.”

On trade talks:
Alexander said there have been no efforts to even test the market to consider a trade involving one of his stars and that the Rockets have received no inquiries.

“Nobody’s called,” he said. “I’m trying to think — no, nobody’s called.”

On D.M.M.M.J.J.W.:
He said the Rockets would still like to bring back Dikembe Mutombo but will not unless they can first move enough salary to avoid paying a luxury tax.

Alexander said the luxury tax threshold of $71.15 million is in effect a hard cap for the Rockets, with the exception of any opportunity to land “a great, great player.”

“I love Dikembe. I love him as a player and as a person,” he said. “He’s a terrific guy and a good player, but he’s not a great, great player anymore.”

Though the Rockets would only have to pay Mutombo about $536,000 (a prorated portion of his veteran’s minimum salary), if signing Mutombo triggered the luxury tax, he would likely cost between $5 million and $7 million in salary, tax and lost shared revenue.

Deke deserves a shot at a ring. If the Celts are interested in him. Then he should go to the Celts.

FOR EVERYONE WHO KEEPS ASKING WHY WE HAVEN'T SIGNED DEKE YET, ONLY TO ELICIT THE SAME RESPONSE FROM ME TIME AFTER HUNDREDS OF TIMES, BE SURE TO READ THIS PLEASE. THANKS. (personally, I think he's almost worth that much - at least 3.5-4 mil anyway)

Les is right, he can't spend 5M (included the luxury tax) for Mutombo. Signing Francis is a big mistake last year, but everyone is thinking that Francis/James would be our starting PG not Alston. At that point it was a good signing, now it's coming back to hunt us. Unless we can move Head or Francis for a trade exception. It's going to be hard to sign Mutombo back.

The numbers are pure BS. The published numbers I've seen show the Rockets above the Lux Tax already,so signing Deke wouldn't matter financially other than the the $500tho+ and the matching tax.

If the salaries-or the way they are counted-are such that the Rockets are just under the Lux Tax,well,Von Wafer is not gauranteed unless he's on the team past Jan 10. His salary matches the portion Deke's would count toward the tax. Seems pretty simple if the Rockets felt they needed Motumbo.

My opinion is the Rockets don't want him,and they are trying to trade for a back-up,while cutting some salary. I'm guessing that while the Rockets would love to package Francis w/Hayes for somebody making just under $4mil,they're quitely shopping Landry as part of a package. W/the salary savings they bring back Harris who can play either the 3 or the 4.

I'm confused.... seems like before the season we were at around 72.5 - 74 million, now we're over 77 with only the addition of Von Wafer? If we're over by that much, I don't see a problem with signing Deke for the minimum (granted, it's not my money). I'd been thinking that signing him made it that much harder for us to get under the cap. Maybe it was from the Artest trade and not checking hoopshype for a while, but... that's weird.

Being over the Tux means that we have to pay twice as much for a player... I think we are trying to upgrade while getting under the tax and possibly giving 2 for 1. Or we are trying to get a Trade Exception and/or a pick for players that other teams do not want.

Les is one owner who HATES the tax, so that is the reason for not signing Mutombo yet.
