Yao should just shoot the ball, instead of dribbling it?

Post#1 » by dunleavyjr » Sun Mar 22, 2009 11:01 pm

I'm not sure if you folks have ever notice. Most of Yao's turnovers are caused by ball dribbling.
I feel Yao is more effective just catch and shoot the ball. He's big, tall. He sees over everybody.
Maybe he should catch/shoot quickly, before giving the defender time to react.

When he's being played by defenders who reach for steals and pull the chair regurarly he could use the inside pivot jumper more, since those players are usually smaller PF's too. Also if a team is using a blitzing double against him he could use the turnaround jumper even more.

But generally, I'd say no. Yao has wicked post game and when he knows how the defense is playing him he should take full advantage of that. It's games where he keeps getting suprised when he could just shoot it up occasionally. Getting more shots from Yao can only help Rockets and every shot from him is a good offensive rebounding opportunity for Scola or Landry.

Against certain players...most notably those that are shorter than him. For example..he should definitely back down someone like Dampier...but he should probably just turn and shoot on a Carlos Boozer or someone like that. Yao isn't a rookie...he should be more than capable of switching up his strategies against certain defenders.

When he dribble to the middle and hook, his shot percentage increase (so is his TOs)...Yao has so many skills and he need to decide which skills he should use at certain point to certain players...

Like Iggy said, I think it just depends on the matchup.

Personally I think it's all about getting position, and I think that's pretty obvious. Often times Yao gets pushed out too far and then tries to back his man down, but he's just too slow to effectively do that. I like what Rick does when we screen for Yao and switch the court to zip a pass into him right as he gets position. I'd also like to see Rick run more cross screens as decoys so that we can fool the D and cleanly get Yao the ball right outside the paint. Our biggest problem with posting Yao up is the fact that whenever we do it, the other team knows exactly what we're doing and Yao is simply too slow to beat the double team especially when guys like Deron Williams and Chris Paul are cheating over.

its simple... Yao needs to punish guys who play him physical... he needs to play even more physical...

I dont care if its a shoulder or his butt or a elbow... or a head butt...

im sick and tired of Yao letting people beat on him...

I for one would rather see him sitting on the bench fouled out...with a flagrant foul... or a tech....
