Did McGrady Stop Carter Trade to Houston?

HoopsWorld reports a trade sending Vince Carter to Houston for Tracy McGrady was scuttled by T-Mac at the trade deadline. According to the site, Nets players believed VC was about to join the Rockets but then “McGrady got wind of the trade and immediately announced he would be having season-ending knee surgery.” McGrady is owed $22.5 million next season. Carter is owed $37.6 million over three.

Vince Carter the Rocket?

HOOPSWORLD recently had a conversation with someone in a position to know what was going on with the Houston Rockets and the effort to trade Tracy McGrady right before the NBA trade deadline. There were a number of rumors out there, such as Houston making a deal with the Clippers for Baron Davis. That one apparently had legs, but another one that was widely rumored seems to have been the one that was going to happen.

This source said that a number of the New Jersey Nets players had been privvy to a discussion about Vince Carter heading to Houston. The Nets were in Houston for a game 48 hours before the deadline and apparently within the team there was extensive talk about how Vince would be in the other locker room in a couple of days.

It all came to an end, of course, when McGrady got wind of the trade and immediately announced he would be having season-ending knee surgery. Still, Houston fans have to wonder where the Rockets would be right now had the trade happened. Without McGrady they've been as good as any team in the West outside of the Lakers. With him, they might have challenged for the best record in the league.

Would've been interesting to see how you guys would've done with Vince. Could have probably been 1st or 2nd in the West and challenged the Lakers in the playoffs.

Hoopsworld isn't the best source for info. But I do believe McGrady did that knee surgery thing to ward off possible trades. IMO the mere fact that he had to search so hard for a doctor to find a structural problem with his knee just killed his credibility. I am not sure if he intentionally killed this particular trade but I am sure his knee surgery announcement was made to so he could stay in Houston instead being traded to a bad team.

Anyway the Rockets will be fine. He can either come back full strength and be a good player for one more year with Houston or he could just sit...Rockets get some disability insurance from the league and McGrady leaves the following summer. All while trying to find that finisher we sorely lack.

facts are clear....

Tmac has screwed to former teams already...

Tmac announced the surgery days before the trade deadline... when 3 doctors had already said he did not need surgery...

and this is surgery on a "non weight bearing part of his knee'

meaning no structural damage...

meaning Tmac did not want to play though the pain like... hundreds of pro ballers before him have...

Mad Balla 15,
The teams were talking, but the Rockets were offering Artest,Landry,Head and Brooks. the Nets were alledged to have gone so far as to see what they could get trading Brooks. It appears the Nets countered w/asking for Battier and Artest and that was it,the Rockets weren't/aren't trading Battier.
Before McGrady shut it down, the Rockets were trying to trade Artest-not McGrady.

If you think about it logically, you would understand how flawed the basis of the Hoopsworld story is. McGrady was playing hurt, basically on one leg and it was obvious he wasn't getting any better. Do you really think the Nets, trying to make the Playoffs, would have traded a healthy Carter and another player for a crippled McGrady based purely on basketball reasons? Obviously not. The Nets would have made that trade to clear cap space for 2010. For that it didn't matter whether McGrady played this season or not. In fact you could make the argument it would be better for the Nets to trade for McGrady after knowing he was going to have the microfracture. If he couldn't play next season, insurance would cover most of his salary and an injury exemption would allow the team to pick up a nice player some distressed team was forced to dump.(Assume at worst insurance pd only 2/3 his salary-it's normally 80%-some $14mil. They use the injury Exception for some player making $6mil,and even w/Lux Tax,the Nets net some $2mil.)
If the Nets were trying to trade for McGrady,it would have not mattered one bit if McGrady had shut it down or not, because they were trading for cap space in 2010,not for bettering the team in 2008/9.
As usual,Hoopsworld adds 2+2 and gets 22.

Yea tisbee I think the Nets were in fact asking too much. I don't think the Rockets would have agreed but I do think they were asking for Battier too and the Rockets just aren't trading him. So thats why I am not sure if it was this particular trade that McGrady was trying to avoid. I don't think we would have agreed to anything with the Nets asking for Battier or Brooks.

I actually don't think he could have played through it but I don't think he needed surgery either. It was probably one of those things where he had to rest and rehab. Maybe miss the season but he wouldn't have needed surgery. I think he put his career in jeopardy b/c he failed to rehab well last off season like great athletes before him have.

Jonathon Feigen,Houston Chronicle,Feb 23....

"Tracy McGrady will undergo the procedure he and the Rockets spent nearly 10 months hoping to avoid....
McGrady had problems with the knee last season, requiring that the team remove fluid buildup and inject anti-inflammatory and lubrication solutions. Though the MRI last May showed the same level of cartilage damage evident now, arthroscopic surgery was performed May 6 to avoid microfracture surgery that would have kept him out most or all of this season."

??? I don't quite see your point....

The guy plays well last season. He played well coming back from his "rehab", nearly posts a triple double, has an emphatic dunk on Tyrus thomas.....

Comes out a week later and says he has "missing cartilage" and will need microfracture surgery.

We all know how tmac is....and quite frankly we're tired of it. No more excuses please, whether valid or not, pretty soon nobody will care when he cries wolf.

i believe T-Mac and Carter trade was being discussed but Nets rejected the offer
the trade that T-Mac actually stop is for B-Diddy

Do I think T-Mac stopped the rumored Carter trade? No idea, but the trade was obviously a bit more complicated than a straight swap.

Do I think T-Mac announcing season-ending surgery right before the trade deadline was just a coincidence? No f-ing way.

looking at the bright side of it, at least he stopped us from taking an aging Carter with nightmarish contract.

Ignorance.

For some reason McGrady was faking it all. His inability to jump or make any sort of explosive move. His pull up jumpers that were really just pulls. Yeah, I'm sure he wanted to average 15ppg on 39% shooting just so he could.....well I don't know what you think his motives were.

This is like saying Yao quit on the Rockets to play in the olympics.

no one said he was faking it...

but the fact is... Tmac was giving us alot of 7 for 23 nights last year as well..

he had pain... but he chose not to play and get ELECTIVE...surgery... unlike most other players who play through the pain... the price you pay for being a pro athlete...

please dont try and bring that Tmac fan and Yao fan... stuff with me...

isnt Yao suppose to go get shoulder surgery after this season?

Yao may be a bumbling clumesy oaf... but his work ethic has never been in question...

add the fact that Tmac was saying he was back... the day before he tried the "dunk..."

the dunk he tried to do with his one "good" leg... got rejected by the rim... then suddenly he was off to find a doctor to do his elective surgery....

Tmac screwed the Raptors... according to their GM at the time...

we all know he quit on and screwed the Magic demanding his trade...(although they might be happy now)

and he screwed us before the trade deadline... by announcing his elective surgery days before the trade deadline.... leaving us with a 21 million dollar hole in the line up...

and I have no doubt he will screw us in 2010 when he becomes a free agent... having already said he wanted to make a impact on the market...

the only people who will be shocked are the Tmac only fans...

because either they wil be too self centered to care like Tmac is...

or just too st#pid.... to even see it coming.... cause after 11 years... they havent got it now they wont get it... ever...

atleast they can go to another team and start all over pretending..

if tmac wants a grant hill-type contract in 2010... i don't mind... he owes it to rockets fans and the rox management.

but then again... "2010 impact" boy may just feel that he is "too good" for that... i have not seen him show much loyalty so far in all the teams he played in... i'm not expecting it overnight.

Like I said on the general board, I wouldn't be surprised, but Hoopsworld is one of the least credible websites out there, KNOWN for making up stories just to make a headline.
