Yao to cleveland?

Nobody has brought it up yet, I think it deserves some attention.

A Chinese business man is trying to acquire ownership of Cleveland Cavaliers, reported by sports.sina.com.cn, a Chinese web portal. The undertaking is reported to be going smooth, and the business man, Mr. Huang, has made a significant step forward around today. This has stirred up the Chinese media as many believes that if Mr. Huang's buying went all the way through, the Cavs will very likely be trying hard to get Yao in its lineup, who if teamed up with LeBron James, will be a bomb to both the game and the market.

Well as a Chinese fan, I dont know what to expect. Surely it looks very promising, but I just cant be sure Yao going to the Cavs will be as successful As Gasol going to the Lakers. Besides Houston is a much bigger name on the map than Cleveland. I think Yao will give it another shot next season, at least, with Tracy back a health man, and Morey hopefully will trade for a decent point guard and a decent backup center. However, if that dont work out better than this season, I think the Cleveland thing will very likely take place in the next summer.

Nah, the chinese business group are acquiring a minority stake in the overseeing organization that run both the Cavs and the Quickens Loan Arena. This is reported by ESPN.

The thing is, getting Yao does not seem to make to the Cavs, in the operations of basketball matters or operations matters. Bron can run. Yao cannot. Bron likes to penetrate. Yao packs the paint. There are two former All Stars in the position that Yao would be playing. Both are somewhat over the hill, but neither Ilgauskas nor Wallace are exactly chopped liver.

Further more, Yao is a max deal player. Bron is a max deal player. The salary cap significance is immense, and Gilbert and co might have to delve deep into pockets to avoid running into what was the Houston Rockets Quagmire in the past 4 years: Having two max deal players limits cap flexibility and it's hard to get all the pieces that fit without Daryl Morey. Granted, they are living in the east and the rest of their division pales in terms of talent comparatively, but the mid majors in the conference, especially Chicago and Philly, as well as the usual suspects of Boston and Orlando, are hardly sitting still. No cap flexibility, no free agent signings, no spending around match up problems unless you have a great deal of money.

As a "somewhat" chinese fan, I can understand is why the Chinese media took the news of a minority investment deal and overblew its significance. However, the soundness of this long term investment relies entirely on Lebron staying after the sweepstakes 2010 and that's not even guaranteed yet. I personally don't see what the significance of a dominant Chinese player playing for Chinese ownership means. Are the to parties going to mesh automatically, just because they are both supposedly coming from the same land mass?

Besides, I can't see Houston sitting still on letting Yao walk. Not unless they know something we don't.

Where Yao plays is going to be determined by the Chinese government. Them having Lebron and now some Chinese ownership does lead to the chance they will push Yao to play in Cleveland. Where he play on TV more and likely for championships. Which is extremely important for them.

And yes it turned out that the Chinese group bought 15% of Cav's share, could somebody elaborate how that is going to change things?

Screw Cleveland, they can have Yi. Yao isn't going to wear another jersey until we finally break out the San Diego throwbacks.

It sounds like Danny Gilbert is experiencing or expecting some financial issues, and is unable to continue spending without the help of outside investors. I see this as an attempt to keep LeBron and the team around him for the long term. I think it has little to do with their attempt to sign Yao Ming in 2010.

Besides which, Cleveland won't have the cap space to sign Yao and Lebron to max deals. With the salary cap declining, it is likely that even if they did have room, the two toegther would take up 75% of their cap by themselves.

Further, we can use the same argument Cleveland fans always make about LEbron. We can offer more money and more years than anyone else. Plus, I don't think a 15% minority share has much to do with anything, at least so far as the Chinese government is involved.

Major members of the buyers group is from HK, reported by sina.com.cn, I dont think the government is involved in this, directly or indirectly. It's a pure market move.

It isn't about un-expected financial trouble. Gilbert has been looking for someone to take a minority share in the team for quite some time because the initial investment team he had in place when he bought the team changed after some of the minority owners backed out. Gilbert has just been footing more of the bill than he originally expected.

I don't see Yao to Cleveland until 2010 at the earliest and even then it is a long-shot. Cleveland would love to have him but I think Yao is happy in Houston.

Plus, is there even a chinese population in Cleveland?? I think that was a pretty big factor in him first coming here (he wanted Chicago, NY....) b/c he wanted to live in a market with a big chinese population.

There's no way a Yao/Lebron team would work that well anyways. Lebron throws the ball at like 100 mph.....LJ would get triple doubles with TOs, not assists. =/

What I do see is Stern trying to tap into the Chinese market by "allowing" a HOU vs. CLE finals matchup?? hahahha then you would know it's really rigged.

Your guys forgot one thing. It is not 100% necessary that Yao takes a Max contract. Yao's salary is only like 15% of his annual income. I don't really know what is the truth story behind this owner. Yao might wanna stay here, but Yao's team could be the one who is trying to move him to somewhere else.

who knows.

After reports a Hong Kong-based company is set to take a minority share in the the Cleveland Cavaliers, people in China predict that Yao Ming will join LeBron James.

"It's very clear that the Cavaliers' next step is to buy Yao Ming," one netizen said on Sina.com. "And then to win the league championship, and then to build a Cavaliers' dynasty!"

"It's a big market, they love the game of basketball," James told Cleveland's Plain Dealer newspaper.

"I've been over there the last four or five summers, and I know how much they are inspired about the game of basketball. So it could be good. It should be fun.

No question Chinese minority ownership will push to go after the biggest Chinese star. Cleveland only has 18 million in salary for 010.
