The Official Houston Rockets 2009 NBA Draft Thread
Posted: Tue Jun 9, 2009 4:30 pm
by TMU
EDIT: Changed the title of this thread from "Houston wants 2nd Overall Pick".
Per Wiretap
The Grizzlies have been approached by several teams about acquiring the second overall pick. Boston, Houston and New York are said to be among the most recent suitors.
Boston and Houston would likely have to offer an established NBA player or two, given that neither team owns a first-round pick. New York owns the eighth pick and likely would want to move up for the opportunity to take Ricky Rubio.

I love Rubio, but who do we have to give up for that?

We'd probably have to give up one of our bigs for him right? And sign&trade wafer? Who know's what Mem wants. It could be anyone b/c they have so many holes in their roster.
Q should be, why would we want that Rubio? I mean, we have 2 pgs. Can he play 2 guard? He's kinda small to put into that spot, although I know Kmart (sac) plays that spot. Oh well, in Morey I trust.

Wow...that is pretty surprising to hear. I know DM said he wanted to try to trade for a pick, I just didn't realize he was trying to get the 2nd overall. What does Memphis want? Cap room for 2010? T-Mac contract? Whatever the case may be we have to leave it to DM to work his magic. This guy knows how to do his job. I feel confident knowing that we have a pretty good relationship dealing with Memphis in the past, so I hope it works out.

If Morey is looking at Rubio with the 2nd overall pick... That's a contender team with a rookie PG, sounds like a Chris Wallace move.

What can we really offer that would entice Memphis to give up Rubio? Brooks? Landry? T-Mac's expiring contract? Is any of that really worth the second overall pick?

Memphis is way under the salary cap, so T-Mac's expiring contract wont mean squat. I really dont know what we could offer besides a combination of players including Scola, Brooks, and etc...

What does Houston have to offer, trading with Houston doesn't make any sense to me. They have two older veteran studs in Artest & Battier, and a breakable Yao, why would they want any of that for a blue chip prospect?

On a side note, here's a list of players they've worked out:
Leo Lyons
Jerel McNeal
Luke Nevill
Micah Downs
Joe Ingles
Alex Ruoff
Jermaine Taylor
Garrett Temple
Dionte Christmas
Courtney Fells
Jeremy Pargo
Robert Dozier

Yes, that's the question we're trying to figure out. But this is Memphis GM we're talking here. I won't be surprised if he pulls another ridiculous trade and get his ass fired.

Hmm...I wonder if they're actually considering giving up Brooks? Maybe giving Rubio a shot? I dunno. This is puzzling, but remember guys, IN MOREY WE TRUST.

It's a bit deceiving that just because they were a bad team this past season that they have a lot of "holes" in their roster. They are a very young team with lots of potential. Gasol, Gay, and Mayo are going to be great players in this league. Conley still has potential to turn into a great player. Their biggest weaknesses is really their bench and their frontline outside of Gasol.
Now them shopping their pick makes sense because they seem to believe in Conley, much like how they traded us Lowry to free up time for him.
As for what HOU could offer, I'd imagine it'd have to be one of our PFs (Landry I would do, Scola would be tough to give up) and one of our PGs (for their back-up PG). We'd probably have to take back one of their bad contracts as well. Maybe a S&T with Artest involved? Who knows. There are definitely possibilities out there. Rubio is still very raw, I wouldn't really call him a sure thing either. The one part of his game that isn't raw is his vision/passing.

Even if we got the second pick, why are you guys assuming that we'd get Rubio?
We're not exactly weak at PG. We need an off guard and a backup center.
Are we looking at another player at 2? Are we looking to draft and trade Rubio for someone who can fill a need? Only Morey knows for sure.
Let's just not jump to conclusions.

I think for some reason Rubio might be a smokescreen for Thabeet. Personally I'd take Thabeet #1, Blake #2 (knee, doesn't have a jumper, isn't a really good ft shooter, Clippers are thinking can he play the 3? wtf?!)...Thabeet is a beast shot blocker, an athlete, a cornerstone of a franchise. Can this Rubio kid really play past his excellent height, decision making, passing ability? PG's today are speedy & quick, and can play D, three things I think he would lack. I'm not sure he's much of a shooter either.

MEMPHIS IS HAVING ANOTHER FIRE SALE!!!! Maybe the Lakers will get another steal and pick up the 2nd pick for A. Morrow or something.
The only reason the Fakers are in the finals is because of the controversial Gasol trade......

I HIGHLY doubt we go after Rubio, unless we know another team REALLY wants him.

Rubio is not a shooter, and has to improve his range, but he is very talented and great work ethic. At this moment, i prefer Hinrich over Rubio

I actually have that mat. My best friend likes giving cubicle decoration kits and spider man coffee mugs as birthday presents. I give her an A for effort, bless her poor dear terrible-yet-not-inexpensive-gift-picking heart.

I'd rather take Hasheem Thabeet over Rubio, honestly speaking. BUT if we did go after this guy, what are we trying to do? Get a back-up center for Yao? OR is this guy capable of being paired in a front-court with Yao (that'd be SCARY 7'3 + 7'6 front court) and his athletic abilities are very good.

Thabeet is pretty raw offensively. He'd fill the role of back-up C perfectly, but at what cost of obtaining a high lotto pick (likely #3) to get him? Rubio OTOH probably would be the starter by the season after next.
I suspect the real reason HOU is in the hunt is because of Adelman however, who wants to see more motion and flow in his offense, and having a true PG with vision will help that development tenfold.
