Stromile Swift and Bonzi Wells

Post#1 » by rag-time4 » Wed Oct 28, 2009 4:46 am

The Rockets seem to have very little depth at SG/SF, and very little talent at PF/C. Scola and Landry have proven to be decent players when they're playing with Yao, Mutombo, and Artest, who are top-quality players at their positions. Without any of the above 3, I don't think Landry and Scola are good enough by themselves to get the Rockets into the post season.

Wells and Swift are former teammates of Shane Battier, Yao Ming, and Tracy McGrady, so they shouldn't take long to fit in.

Both guys would make the Rockets a much deeper, more talented team.

This double roper of wisdom required a new thread?

Wow.

I'm going to start a thread titled "Hey, why does my toe hurt?"

Well I didn't see a thread discussing Bonzi Wells and Stromile Swift so I figured I would start one.

Your logic is unassailable. Your priorities, on the other hand...

(After all, you probably won't see a thread about World B. Free, either. Does that mean one should be started?)

Stromile Swift hasn't done a damn thing since his days at LSU. It's a shame really, because I actually thought he would be pretty good in the NBA and I was even more excited when we signed him as a FA. I'd rather play Chuck Hayes.

Bonzi Wells ?!?!? Your kiddin right?

So you're comparing a player who retired 20+ years ago to two players who are both former Rockets, both familiar with many key players on the current roster, both better than players currently on the Rockets roster, and both readily available free-agents.

The priority for the Rockets is adding quality depth, which is sorely lacking on the current roster.

Oh waaaaiiit.

Your original, semi-cogent idea was "Rox should pick up Stromile and Bonzi"??

Oh. I thought you were joking about that part. (It IS a pretty laughable idea, when you consider neither of those guys are even in the LEAGUE any more.) You see how I might get confused.

Meanwhile, I'll stick with World B. Free..or maybe a thread about Dave Cowens.

Yeah, but McGrady and Yao aren't on the floor right now. I personally think depth is a bad idea and would prefer to lose and get a good draft pick.

houston is gonna wait if tmac can return, if he can there'll be enough depth at the 2/3, both brooks/lowry can play sg btw . the pf/c will be the same unless there's a big trade w/ tmac, there's a lotta depth there but obvioulsy w/o yao there will be problems. if andersen pans out we're good enough at pf/c, as long as scola and landry can up their game.

i would rather eat a bowl of **** then have bonzi and swift (another GOD **** DAAMED UNDERSIZED PF) return to the team. i am sick of seeing every other team man handling our bigs, its sickening, nightmares, doctor visiits, precribed medicatioin, drug abuse, you name it, it has happened to me :( , i hope starting next year our frontcourt will be tall :)

Bonzi Wells is probably around 300 pounds right now. Also he was one of my least favorite Rockets of the Yao era.

If that's the case, maybe we should consider these signings after all.

You're correct, Stromile Swift and Bonzi Wells are not currently signed by any team in the LEAGUE right now. That's why I pointed out that they are free agents. A free agent is a player who isn't currently signed by any team in the LEAGUE.

Kyle Lowry can play the SG, that's true - he's a good, physical player. However, the Rockets give up a lot of height by playing Lowry or Brooks at SG. Combine that with the loss of Yao, Mutombo, and Artest, and you have a Rockets squad that is far weaker defensively than last year's squad. Bonzi Wells isn't a lock-down defender either, but his length allows him to generate some steals. Offensively, he would probably be the Rockets best post-up player with Yao out, and certainly the best post-up player coming off the bench.

Stromile Swift is a quick, explosive PF, but he does get pushed around a bit by bigger players at times. However, He's a solid rebounder and an excellent defender. Unlike the current Rockets bigs, Stromile is an impact player on the defensive side, and can completely change games with his shotblocking ability. Swift's shotblocking, as with anyones, can be totally negated if he's playing in the same lineup with two small guards who areeasy for opponents to shoot over. With taller wings, like Bonzi, Battier, and Ariza, a shot blocker can have a huge impact. Here is a comparison between Stromile Swift's career shot blocking numbers with the current Rockets bigs:

Hayes 0.3 bpg
Scola 0.2 bpg
Landry 0.3 bpg

Swift 1.2 bpg

Stromile Swift's career blocks per game number is higher than all of the current Rockets bigs put together... (nearly double)

Dude! One word: re-f**king-prioritize!
The height of the Rockets frontcourt should not have significant negative impact on your health.
Try getting a hobby. If you're still in school, maybe study?
Damn.

Would you go on a 7 month drinking binge if you were a big tennis fan and Andy Roddick missed 5 backhands in a single Grand Slam? Sounds ridiculous, right?

i would take a bottle of advil if roddick missed one grand slam

i was just saying that adding swift would be too many undersized bigs. rebounding, defense, boxing out, etc...the opponenst will have an edge on that cuz of us being small. if we can have one more 7footer, other than yao and andersen, we wont need to worry about that. if andersen pans out to be above average at rebounding, then we found our 7footer

i mean its like this...celtics won w/ kg and perks, both 6'10+
lakers won w/ gasol/bynum, both 7 ft
detroit had sheed and ben, sheed 6'11, ben a dpoy player
spurs had duncan and another 6'10 big

lets say yao is the same next year, that'd be good
if andersen can be average on defense and rebounding, then we wouldnt need another real sized big.

i have 100% confidence that andersen can play nba basketball, on both ends of the court (offense more than defense)

I think Anderson is legit and could play with Yao if needed. He also will be a legit backup C.
