If you can only keep one. Scola or Landry?
Landry is quietly putting up a terrific season. He is averaging 16/6 in 25 minutes with a PER of 22.8. Just un-freakin-believable. And Scola gives us 14/9 and a variety sizzling post moves in the paint.
If they continue this pace, both of them will command Pau Millsap(9 million Per) type money in free agency. There is just no way we can afford to keep both.
If it comes down to one or the other, who do you keep?

Carl is 3 years younger so I would go for him.
But I think a better scenario is Carl starting at small forward next to Scola
He is the same size as Lebron James, has a good midrange J and is athletic. Why not?

Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

Landry's strengths are his quickness over most PF and his improving low post plays which is more of a PF's forte. SF is mostly a wing position meaning Landry would then have to defend the opponent wing player - Landry may get into foul trouble as some SF is quicker than Landry.
Regarding whether to keep Scola or Landry, we have to look at the bigger picture. Is Yao playing for rockets? I see Landry as a better compliment to Yao. But Scola is very durable and you would like to have such player given the injury history of Yao. Difficult decision. I see Rockets 1st option is try to retain both and let the market decide which one is more affordable to keep while maintaining balance with the rest of the team.

No 3 point range. Doesn't have enough lateral quickness to defend the perimeter. Poor ball handling. Landry's only position in the NBA is PF.

There's no SF minutes to go aroung with Ariza, Battie and TMAC (if he plays) so thats not to likely to play him there and his not suited to play that pos. I would pay Landry because he is younger....

Despite being 3 years older, don't forget how durable Scola is, the only injury in NBA has been in his eye, but his body seems less injury prone than younger Landry.
Such kind of bodies tend to have long careers, showing his best shape until their mid 30s.
Besides, Scola contributes more than what it says in his stats, with a lot of intangibles, due to his very high Basketball IQ, his attitude and leadership (FWIW, when he was 17, just arrived to European Basketball, he was the one taking leadership of much older argentinian players who arrived with him, at 19 he took a whole Spanish first division team on his back, ahead of veteran former NBA players)...well, I guess such intangibles are useful in winning teams also...
Anyway, in my opinion, 2 great PF who are unlikely to play another position, are a waste on any roster.....one of them (any of them) should be traded to fill another position in need for the team with an similarly good player......don't you think?

Both are 2nd round picks who got signed to a 3 yr deal, doesnt that mean they are RFA this summer? If they are, then Houston can also keep them and maybe manage a S&T on one of them, or even both if something interesting is coming...

given the economic climate, unless someone has a lot of cap space, these 2 are never going to get that 9m/yr contract... this is coupled by the potential shrinking of the cap. so i don't expect them to get anything beyond an ariza-type contract.

I worry about Landry if he were to start. I think it depends on our team. If we have nobody that can create shots to where a guy like Landry can just finish either with the jumper or around the basket I think I would want Scola.

I really think the solution to this question is a cloning machine and a blender.
Why choose between them when we can have CARLUIS SCOLANDRY for 48 minutes a game?

While Scola may be older, i actually do think he's going to be more durable. His style of play is so grounded that he may play well into his late 30s. Landry's game is 100% based on athleticism. As he gets older, he's going to become Brandon Bass.

Don't say that. I've always thought he was the next Carlos Boozer but more durable.

Boozer is a great rebounder tho. Landry is average or just a tad above average.

I think I'd take Landry, he's become our go to player in the fourth quarter, and arguably, one in which I'd be comfortable in making, the best offensive player on the team this season. The main thing Scola had over him was the ability to create better for himself, I'm not sure that's the case anymore.

I really like Scola. I'm not giving him up for Garnett.

Quite true... A strong and durable body, plus a style not depending on speed or athleticism to contribute (instead he relies mostly in his very high Basketball IQ, something not lost with age) ....makes him a lot more likely to play his best into his late 30s than younger athletic freaks.
