Which players do you think Morey is watching?

Post#1 » by Mr. E » Fri Dec 11, 2009 3:04 pm

Curious what everyone thinks about the types of players that Daryl Morey may be looking at in terms of trades or free agency.

I'm not talking about the guys like LeBron or Wade. I'm talking value-type players with high basketball IQ, high effenciency and production.

Look at the guys on our roster (and their contracts)

Luis Scola
Chuck Hayes
Shane Battier
Kyle Lowry
Aaron Brooks
Carl Landry

Players like that. Guys who have the work ethic and mentality to appeal to Morey. Guys who may just be in a bad situation like Lowry was last year.

Which players around the League are "Morey Players?"

Rudy Fernandez is an obvious choice.
Sergio Rodriguez is another guy that comes to mind.

Both players have high salaries. Imo Morey typically aims for players who are under 30 and receiving small salaries (appr. less than or equal to the MLE).

Jerryd Bayless. The guy is relentless going to the rim. He and Lowry are very much alike. If we let one of Brooks or Lowry go, i hope we make a play at Bayless.

If you look at the players Morey has brought in,they tend to have one particular skill that they are supposed to excell at.
Scola-low post scorer
Landry-tenacious rebounder
Brooks-scoring
Dorsey-defense/rebounding
Green-shooting
Wafer-shooting
Lowry-relentless pushing the ball/attacking the rim
Andersen-distance shooting

The 3players he's acquired that had more than modest salaries are slightly more well rounded, but still are/were known mainly for their defense:
Battier-defense/intangibles/leadership
Artest-defense/toughness/scoring
Ariza-defense/quickness/room for growth.

So his lower priced players are role players who have one needed skillset that they excell at.
His higher priced players to date have to play D and either offer huge intangibles or a well-rounded game.

I'd like to get Rudy here via a Battier trade. But with Portland's injury bug I don't see them packaging a group of players together to match Battier's salary this year. I'd also like to get Sergio Rodriguez over here too. But to get him I see us signing him to a value contract in the off-season with a portion of the MLE.

I've always liked Mike Miller as well. I could see Morey going after him in the off-season as well. He would fit in nicely at SG.

I agree with this. I have been trying to tell other Blazer fans that Bayless is so much like Lowry. It was fun to see them go right at each other the other day, even though Bayless' flop was pretty bad lol. I wish Portland would fricken play the kid, its hard to watch Steve Blake play 38 mpg.

Also it is truly amazing to watch how the Rockets play! They have a bunch of 2nd round picks and late 1st round picks, yet they are right in the playoff race. I will tell you one thing if it comes down to Portland or Houston for that final playoff spot, there is no way i would bet against this Rockets team.

Also you guys dont want Sergio, trust me. AB and Lowry are a great pg combo and really contrast each other great. Sergio cant shoot, cant penetrate, cant play D, and is not very quick or athletic. All he provides is court vision, and if Yao is in your future Sergio would be a terrible pickup because he is strictly a transition player.

Thats my $.02 take it for what its worth

I wouldn't be surprised that Joe Johnson was #1 or #2 on DM's free agent list.

For the "big names," I would agree...but man, I don't see him wanting to leave Atlanta right now the way they're playing.

Hey - we could always hope that they get in trouble financially!

(but that would be bad karma...)

whatchaknow - thanks for your thoughts on Bayless & Sergio. Always nice to read thoughts from the other side! ;)

Bayless will be a star if given the chance. he has so much potential as seen from game against us... i see him like a better version of Monta Ellis if given the chance in future.

Mike Miller no way. No D and too much money. Joe Johnson hell yes, perfect fit. Expensive, but in his prime and efficient.

See thats what i think 2, so now tell me why the hell does Steve Blake play over him? I just dont understand sometimes. Right now i can hardly watch the Blazers play the Bucks because Bayless comes in and brings us back in the game, then the 4th quarter comes around and Blake comes back in. Just inexplainable. Its hard to be a fan and hope that your team trades away such a promising talent because they dont play him.

Btw Joe Johnson would be an absolutely great pickup for you guys
