The Houston Rockets are in the discussion stages of a complicated, three-team trade that would send Tracy McGrady(notes) to the New York Knicks, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The centerpieces of the trade would include the Washington Wizards shipping forward Caron Butler(notes) and center Brendan Haywood(notes) to the Rockets. The Knicks would send Al Harrington(notes) to the Wizards. For the Wizards’ part, they would still need another player, as well as a draft pick and cash to make this a workable scenario, sources said.

Other players and contracts would still need to be agreed upon for a deal to come together, but there is a framework to the discussions.

The Rockets have been peddling McGrady’s expiring contract of $23 million since exiling him in late December.

If you guys end-up with Butler and Haywood out of T-Mac's expiring w/o giving-up a rotation player, we're talking thievery on the Pau Gasol level.

This works:

NY: McGrady, James ---29,3 mio in/ 23,9 out
HOU: Butler, Haywood, Jeffries ---22,2 mio in/24,9 mio out
WAS: Harrington, Milicic, (Hayes)** --- 19,7 mio in/22,1 mio out

*** Instead of Hayes HOU could give Lowry, Budinger, Draft pick...basically a WAS choice.

Both teams HOU and WAS take less salary in than sending out. Houston clearly gets better players, WAS gets a prospect or two, maybe draft pick from HOU, NY takes additional salary to get rid of 2010 Jeffries.

T-Mac is still the best player in the deal though. His expiring contract is the most valueable and if he truly is ready to go then he would produce far more than any one else involved in the trade.

And why do we want Butler? GO FOR MIKE MILLER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Knick fan here:

I don't think the deal is as simple as it sounds. The Wizards have to clearly get much more than an expiring for an expiring (Haywood) and Butler(just one year remaining for 8mill.). The Wizards would be better off letting Haywood expire and they could easily get an 8mill. expiring for Butler I believe.

The Knicks IMO wouldn't improve much with McGrady over Harrington----Harrington puts up 20/6---how much better is McGrady at this point?Even if McGrady goes for 22/6/4 that isn't such a huge improvement and the Knicks are out of the playoff picture anyways. If the Knicks aren't planning on keeping Harrington they might just give it a shot but the Wizards clearly need more in such a deal.

I'd suspect it goes like this:

Knicks get McGrady

Houston gets Butler/Haywood

Washington gets Houston's unprotected first round pick,maybe Knicks 2nd rounder,Chase Budinger,Harrington,Mobley's insured contract,cash

Houston goes with a Butler/Battier/Ariza rotation at the wing positions and Hayes/Haywood in the frontcourt---you become a strong team that might give the Lakers/Denver a run for their money and overtake all the other western conference playoff teams including Utah.

Also I hope Jeffries is included in the deal. butler and Jeffries really have only one year remaining after this one so it isn't really a bid deal at all IMO.Ming,Butler,Jeffries and Battier all come off the books next year so this shouldn't hold up a deal in which Houston improves the most (by far).
Also your pick would probably be in the 22 range if this goea down.

Why does the Knicks need to be involve in this? Couldn't we just do a straight trade with the Wizard?

It's not just the Rocket's end that's missing something. It's the Knick's end. The Knicks take on some salary for this year greater than the other two teams sure. However, the Knicks still probably have to send something out value to Washington for their efforts in order to be willing to send these guys.

The Rockets with

PG- Brooks
SG- Battier
SF- Butler
PF- Scola
C- Haywood

Lowry
Ariza
Landry

Are quite formidable.

Considering you're not giving anything outside of an expiring that's what you're probably contributing to the deal considering that the Knicks and Washington need to have a real incentive for the trade (T-Mac is not a real incentive, it's an experiment to see if he can still play next year for a low contract).

Not necessarily....we'll prob trade someone to the wiz too to make it work or a pick. I see no reason why the Wiz do this trade without something to sweeten the deal on their end.

Once this goes down, I think a lot of teams are gonna get the ball rolling on their end and a lot of trades are gonna go down. Amare to 76ers/Heat, etc. I hope Dallas doesn't get Martin. =/

Miller's an expiring. That would defeat the whole purpose of the trade.

Between us crashing back down to earth and the trade deadline approaching....all I can say is that its about time. But I think we've all been around long enough to know that the deals you don't know of are the ones that happen.

That is true. When was the last time Morey trade was leaked before it was finalized?

Yeah I know but he is a much better fit than Butler would be though. :/

i'll take any trade at this point. if it was a month or 2 ago when we were doing well, i would have preferred better players. but now we need any help we can get. tho i really cant really picture tmac in a knicks jersey.

Hell I'd buy one!

Here's how I see the psychology behind the possible deal:

1) New York wants McGrady badly (for his expiring only)

2) New York does not have the assets to interest Houston to trade McGrady

3) Washington does have the assets Houston wants for McGrady

4) Washington has no interest in McGrady

5) New York has some assets of interest to Washington

6) Houston is content to let McGrady expire if no good deals come about

With all of that in mind, the onus to get this deal done right now is on the Knicks. They need to convince Washington to participate and send Houston what they want. Neither Houston, nor Washington need to add additional assets to make this happen. At this point it is up to the Knicks to give Washington a package which they feel is worth this move.

Just my thoughts on it. I haven't had a chance to read a lot about this today, so I don't know if anything I've said has been contradicted or not. I do think that if this rumored deal goes down then both Houston & Washington fans will be happy, but the Knicks fans will be ready to lay seige to the Garden.
