I'll skip the exposition, and just ask:

Why do so many young black men hyphenate their last names? (Maurice Jones-Drew, etc.)

I hate to come across as "that white guy", but I'm confused.

Little help?

It is because it is what it is. If it was not what it is, than it would not be what it is.

Well being as I have 23 years worth of experience as a black man, I think I'll weigh in on this topic. You know I've often wondered what this sudden phenomenon is about. I mean c'mon Jones-Drew, Douglas-Roberts, Rodgers-Cromartie, Zeta-Jones... wait a second. Anyway, I happen to personally know a few hyphenated people myself. And as much as I hate to say it, my experience leads me to believe it has to do with broken homes. From what I've seen they want to represent both sides of their family. Now I'm not saying this is why everyone does it. But from the ones that I know personally, that seems to be the common thread.

And for the mothers that decide to hyphenate their name, thats probably the dumbest thing I've heard of. Cause what if you have daughter with a double last name and she gets married to another hyphenated namer, and she wants to keep her name too. Then I guess the kid would have like four last names. If she wants to keep her name, fine, but don't pass it along.

Great.

The Resident Black Dude doesn't even get it.

(Though his confusion does serve to assuage my WhiteDevilGuilt...a bit.)

Its the parents. That is how they wrote his name on his birth certificate. He has two last names joined together with a hyphen.

I know because I agreed to the same thing with my son. She thought it was fair cause we werent getting married. Hell we weren't even together. But once I got the paternity test results. I filed for an amendment to change his last name through the court. Then we had to get crap notarized and then I had to pay for new birth certificates and on and on and on. But it was worth the money and all the drama from her.

If I had to guess, I would say a single mother might hyphenate the son's name because she raises him.

Every woman I've ever known to hyphenate their names usually gives their children their father's last name.

I don't know man. My friend hated her ex so much, she wanted to change her daughter last name to hers (without the father).

i think mjd said in an interview that he did to honor his grandmother who passed away recently. its a tribute to her. she might have been the one to take care of him when he was younger.

This isn't a phenomenon limited to black people. It's simply a matter of the people with hyphenated names either having unmarried parents at the time of their birth or their mother not taking on the father's name, and passing both names on to their children. I've got both family names, just not hyphenated, and I know several (white) people who do have hyphenated names, but only use their father's for the sake of efficiency.
