Staffords season over

Post#1 » by ajaX82 » Thu Dec 24, 2009 6:17 pm

The Detroit Lions placed rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford on injured reserve Wednesday because of a knee injury that will require surgery, the team announced.

Stafford will fly Tuesday to Birmingham, Ala., where Dr. James Andrews will perform the procedure. The surgery is considered minor.

Stafford does not need surgery on his separated non-throwing shoulder, an injury that has sidelined him for several games. Because he was not going to play this week, Stafford and the Lions decided to move up the date of his knee procedure to quicken his offseason recovery.

So we have seen the last of Matt this year, which is good. He needs to get fully healthy. Shall we look back at his year????

I will say he was definitely a rook and made some boneheaded throws at times, but he showed that he is the future QB and a star in the making. Coming out for the Browns game to throw that gamewinner put aside any doubts I had.

Hell looking forward i am especially glad we got him now, because the QBs this year suck (I would want no part of Clausen, Bradford, Tebow or McCoy) and we can get some really good defensive players to start to rebuild.

Im excited for him next year with a season of experience and an offseason of prep.

I agree with you 100%. The QB's this year (pro potential) suck. Some very good (even great) college QB's, but I do not think they are starting QB material. A group of journeymen QB's. Last year I was against Stafford and thought the Lions should have taken the draft picks (if that was on the table, that is). I felt like they would be better off with Culpepper and the other backups. Let them get hurt. In hindsight, though...Stafford will be a great QB in the future. My concern is a team built around him. Nothing new...

Well I firmly believe Stafford can only do better next year. Good luck to him and us then!

Although I wouldn't mind exploring some interesting trade offers where we exchange him for a different potential franchise QB. There is no doubt that there would be at least a few interesting possibilities that could come about with some of the different QB prospects in this draft as well as a few guys on rosters now that could eventually start showing signs of possible movement. It will be interesting to see if any interesting rumors surface throughout the process. Never hurts to listen..., so long as we don't actually make the phone calls or acknowledge anything of course, it has to be top secret, even the President won't have the appropriate clearance levels for that kind of Intel. ;)

It's basically a surgery to clean out his knee. Which can only help him. As well as give him time to heal the shoulder. Get well soon Matty.

He had a good rookie season IMO. He made mistakes. He threw picks. He made bad judgement calls. But the development he made in his 10 games will really help him improve next season. The chemistry he started with some guys will only grow. The knowledge of the game he showed was great. The effort and winning spirit he displayed really lifted this organization.

Stafford is our QB moving forward. That is a huge piece that Martin Mayhew got right and got out of the way. Now he can address other needs. Now that Schwartz knows what Matt can and can't do, they can find the right mix of players to put around him offensively.
