Don't like either McCluster or Blount...
Blount wasn't the best RB in Oregon (see James), and McCluster is super small. I see him as a poor-man's Darren Sproles, only not as good.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
1. Blount was the best RB in Oregon. He was just suspended the year due to punching that Boise State guy. Coaches at senior bowl are PRAISING the hell outta this guy cuz he's so big and strong but extremely fast for his size.
2. McCluster is the best player on the South team. Every coach has said that. A couple coaches have even said he's the best player out of both teams. Comparing him to Sproles is king of unfair since Sproles don't like to run up the gut and shy's from contact. McCluster, however, LOVES to hit people and get carries up the middle.
You know, coming from a city that drafted an undersized RB and became the best RB in NFL history, you would think that there would be a little more compassion to a player like McCluster.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
I've watched McCluster and am not impressed. Maybe he'll change my mind, but its doubtful.
Blount was reinstated, and still could not get James out of the game. James was easily Oregon's best RB last season.

Blount is much better than James.
I really like McCluster, but I wouldn't take him any earlier than the 4th unless we got a second 3rd somehow. But at the top of the 3rd round, is just a little too soon for him IMO.

I like him, except for he missed a year of football. But he really shined in Senior Bowl practices and clearly the kid is smart as hell, which is what you want from a FS.
Id reach there
Isnt McCluster a bit redundant with Aaron Brown?

McCluster could be used in a variety of ways. I don't think he'd be redudant with Brown, but that's just my opinion.

How not than? Im honestly asking? From my limited knowledge of McCluster, I think he is kind of a speed back, third down back who can catch the ball and return kicks. Kinda like a Reggie Bush lite. But isnt that kind of what Brown did this year?
Correct me if im wrong tho, im interested

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Yeah, it is what Brown did... but McCluster is a lot faster, quicker, agile then Brown (And that's saying a lot since Brown is very athletic). The thing I love about McCluster is, he loves to hit and get hit. That's what Reggie Bush and Darren Sproles lack. They shy away from contact and just try to run around everyone. McCluster will sometimes cut RIGHT into a defensive player instead of just trying to run away. He loves football and has a very good head on his shoulders.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
I'm surprised some of you actually think Blount is better than James. Blount was reinstated with 4 games to go on the season, and only got like 15 carries in those 4 games - TOTAL. James was too good for them to play Blount.
James ran for almost 1600 yards last season, and had a YPC average of around 7.
James is easily the better RB IMO - and in the Oregon coaches opinion as well.
Not saying Blount's no good, but I'd take James over him 7 days a week.

When you miss out the whole season, of course you're not going to come back good.

I thought he was able to practice with the team all season, just couldn't play in the games.....

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Yeah, if Blount didn't get suspended, James wouldn't have played as much as he did. He did well when Blount was out, but he didn't exactly earn the spot by outplaying Oregons best RB.

Nope. Suspended from all team activity indefinitely.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Wrong - he practiced all season with the team. So his conditioning should not have been a problem.

Blount's suspension includes bowl games. He will remain on scholarship, however, and will continue to practice with the team.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Dexter McCluster is more of a jack of all trades/master of none type player. He's strong yet fast as a RB. He's fast, has good hands and good field awareness as a WR, and he's got a good change of direction move as a returner. I know Aaron was used primarily as a returner last year, but they really bring different tools to the table. As a third round pick, he'd be an exceptional multi-positional player for us, which these Lions can really use.
How the draft is shakingout IMO...
1st- Suh or McCoy DT, most likely McCoy at this point. Seems Berry isn't on the Lions big board at #2.
2nd- Best CB available, one of Perrish Cox, Donovan Warren, Kyle Wilson and Patrick Robinson are likely.
3rd- Dexter McCluster RB/WR
4th- Best lineman available, wouldn't mind Jon Asamoah OG here but BOTH lines need alot of help.
5th- Best lineman or secondary available
5th- Best player available
6th- Best player available
7th- Best player available
Comp?-Best player available

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Well, for the 2nd round pick, it's not going to be best CB available. It's going to be BPA.
My order of possible 2nd round picks in order of which I'd grab them:
Iupati
Dunlap
Dan Williams
Wilson
Graham
Pierre-Paul
Cox
Ghee
Prolly in that order, or something similarly close.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Iupati, Williams, Graham, Pierre-Paul will all go first round. Dunlap, Ghee and Wilson are borderline first.
I think Lions go after the best CB in the second. We're getting one of the DTs in the first (Suh first *prays mercilessly* and then McCoy). I think that much is clear unless we trade down which I haven't heard anything about.
This draft is deep with defensive linemen. The best players available in the second will be the RBs/WRs and CBs. I see the Lions going after a CB in the 2nd knowing that McCluster will be there in the third.

Players slip and if one of those happened to slip, Detroit should take them without hesitation.
Iupati - This could completely turn our OLine around. Having a better then average next to Backus could quite possibly bring out the Backus that Mayhew and Schwartz talk about.
Williams - He is the IDEAL DT that Schwartz wants. He's big, fast, and physical. He would be GREAT alongside McCoy or Suh.
Graham / Pierre-Paul - Best pass rushing DE's in the draft. Regardless of what any of us say, our DE's are below average and ATLEAST one of the spots needs to be filled.
Dunlap - Idk what it is about the guy. Last year, he was projected a number one overall talent. I HIGHLY doubt he hates the game as much as people say. If he has a pay check in front of him, I think he'd put his butt on the line for a team. He's tall, heavy, and an athletic ANIMAL. It would be a gift to have him slip to #34
Wilson - Best CB in the draft besides Haden, and Schwartz loves the guys 'swagger'. Schwartz compared him to Louis Delmas.
Ghee / Cox - It's borderline who I would take first between these two. They are about equal in my eyes.
Point being, the difference between the 3rd / 4th round CB's aren't that different from the 2nd round DB's. I think CB isn't going to be as big of an issue as it was if we beef up our DLine big time. If I could have the chance of having Suh and Dunlap or JPP or Dan Williams, I would jump all over it and address the CB in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th round.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
I'm finding more and more people who like McCoy over Suh. I have no real preference, but McCoy is more of a gap penetrator and sacker while Suh is more power and a stud against the inside run who will get about half the sacks. The Lions need both and I will be happy with either one.
I took a real liking to Perrish Cox down in Mobile. He's got a lot of Dre Bly in him, a QB baiter with great hands and great instincts for jumping the route and playing inside man cover technique. Cox was a more enthusiastic tackler than Bly in college, though he's smaller. He also is a great upgrade at PR/KR. I slotted him to the Lions at #34 in the latest mock but that's just a guess at this point. I do know the Lions coaches were looking very hard at DL and secondary, which is encouraging.
They had a tackle on the North team that steadily improved throughout the week and really seemed to click with the coaches, Ed Wang of Virginia Tech. Very big, a little lumbering and pudgy, but he's got real good hands and arm extension. He's a good candidate at the top of the 5th or perhaps a little earlier with some slot jockeying. I know the offensive coaching staff saw a lot in him. Probably won't help much next year but could emerge as a starter in 11 or 12.
Two guys that do not fit the Lions: Patrick Robinson and Taylor Mays, both of whom could fall to #34. Let 'em keep falling, we don't need any more DBs that are devoid of football IQs. I've never been a big Mays supporter but honest to God it's like he has no concept that his job as safety entails anything other than "kill the receiver crossing in front of me by taking a bad angle and coaxing an unnecessary roughness penalty". I was pleasantly surprised that a lot of NFL coaches and scouts really soured on him.

It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game
