Re: 2010 Draft prospects
If Bradford goes #1, we take Suh unless someone knocks our socks off with a trade offer. That won't happen, so we take Suh....
If Suh it taken #1, then that does open up some trade down scenarios for Bradford (Browns, Bills, Redskins, Raiders, Seahawks?), but these teams would likely be calling Tampa instead of us.
They know that we're not looking to take a QB - same with Tampa. So why trade up to #2 when it would cost less to go to #3, and get ahead of the Redskins?
I'd like us to move down if Suh goes #1, I'm just not sure we will be able to.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
So Russell Okung....can we chat about him? I'll admit i dont know a whole lot about him because i dont watch Big 12 football ever. He is pretty much the top LT on everones board i know and it seems the Lions have a definite interest in him.
Combine numbers were exceptional: 6'5'', 305, longest arms there at 36'', 38 reps were the most by an OT, ran a fairly quick 5.17 40. Clearly the guy is physically a beast and perfect for LT
What are his strengths and weaknesses? If i recall he is an elite pass blocker and just an ok run blocker, which would make selecting him and making Backus LG (who is a good run blocker and bad pass blocker) a good fit. Do you guys know anything special about him? Anyone watch him a bunch? Could this guy be an anchor at LT for 10+ years?
Chime in kids. Ice, i will be as usual interested in your thoughts on Okung as a player and as a fit with us

Lions are expected to get visits from Suh, McCoy, and lesser-known names like TE Ed Dickson (Oregon) and FB John Conner (Kentucky, or the Terminator movies, right?)

Everything you said is basically right. I heard if it wasn't for his pass protection, he'd be just an average LT, but he is one of the best pass blocking tackles to come out in a very very long time. He's a better pass blocker then Joe Thomas, but Joe is better all around blocker. Having Okung next to Backus would be absolutely amazing since Okung would be an elite pass blocker and put him next to an elite run blocker like Backus.... you'll have a great blind side. Plus, Okung played college ball with Pettigrew and Pettigrew was mainly a blocker in OK State so they have a lot of chemistry.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
BTW, when can teams start negotiating with the top picks? Like, can we start negotiating with Okung, Suh, and McCoy - knowing at least one will still be on the board at #2? Or is there a timeline in which we cannot discuss possible deals before?

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
The Rams can negotiate with whoever they want at any time now, but nobody else can do any negotiating until they sign a pick. And then after they do, the Lions have to get clearance from the league first before they can negotiate with anybody. The league doesn't want all the players to be signed before the draft, so if the Rams sign somebody well before the draft, the league might try to slow down the process of giving Detroit the green light so it doesn't screw up their TV plans.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Slightly off-topic....
Have there been any reports as to what players the Rams have already had visists with in regard to the draft?
We've already had quite a few in here for visits. According to reports, Suh has not been there yet, and may not for at least another week or two...
Have they have Bradford and/or Clausen visit already?
Who they have visit sooner rather than later could be very telling.....
EDIT: Just found this per kffl.com

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
just a quick refresher for anyone who is confused by all the trades and such, via MLive:
http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/20 ... seven.html
So, after the deals involving Corey Williams, Chris Houston and Shaun Hill, here's how it stands: The Lions have their own pick in each of the first five rounds. They don't have a draft choice in the sixth round by they have two in the seventh (Cleveland's and the compensatory pick -- the last selection of the draft at No. 255.)

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Martin Mayhew seems convinced that he has a deal to trade down. If so, I think Russell Okung is the main target. It'll be interesting to see which team moves up, and what they are willing to give the Lions to move up.
I don't mind picking Okung if we trade down... but I don't want him at #2 just because people don't want to pay #2 money to a DT even thought the best prospect in the draft is a DT.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
I think they are lookin' at it like this.... Would you rather have Suh and some 2nd or 3rd round LT or Okung and either Brian Price, Linval Joseph (who is 330 pounds, ran a 5.08, and did 40 reps O_o), etc.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
That doesn't make any sense Bartender.
The OBVIOUS best play here is to trade Suh. But the options you gave, the Suh option is best. I'd rather have that one. We don't want Price or Linval, those guys kill that 2nd option. We DO NOT NEED A DT DUDE! We have MORE DTs than any other team in the NFL for crying out loud!

But we also have the least talented DT's then anybody else in the NFL... so we need a talented one.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Then you lose the less talented one. You don't lose players at other positions, but you do at DT. How do you not see how that doesn't help us build and improve and plug holes?
And you really that sure that ALL these DTs aren't going to be good? So you are telling me Corey Williams, SLH, Fluellen, and Cohen, are all no good? Shoot, any of those 4 guys look like they could be starter material. They are all viable prospects. They are amongst the best prospects we do have, well they are really amongst the very few of the prospects we have. And you want to add them to the cost to get a slight possibly upgrade that may or may not exist since we don't even know what these guys might develop into? It's just not logical is what I'm saying.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
From a 'TSE' argument, they had there chances last year and failed to put pressure on the quarterback. Talent at the DT position is one of our biggest needs because we fail to put the pressure on opposing QB's. Brady Quinn had years in the pocket to light us up.

No... Last year I was complaining every single day about Grady Jackson (and others actually) taking time away from these guys. I don't like leaving unknown chips for the future. And that's what Mayhew FORCED into us. We don't know what these guys are worth, or at least we shouldn't know what they are worth compared to how much we could know if they played more last year or this year. These guys are young and not everybody develops like clockwork and is a good or bad player by their 2nd year, that's not how football works. THIS year is WAY more important as a measure of each player than last year was. You have to give guys a fair amount of time and chance, and none of these prospects have that yet, but Fluellen and Cohen probably both will get that chance this year. AFTER this year is when it starts becoming appropriate to know what they are worth, at least in this Mayhew system where the clock of lead-time on figuring things out runs slow and inefficient.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
So, you'd rather put faith in Fluellen and Cohen then Matthew Stafford?! You'd rather trade away Stafford or waste a draft pick on another QB rather then take the the best player in the entire draft or another DT that is 330 pounds, runs a 40 just as fast as the 2nd ranked ILB, and repped 225 pounds 40 times, or take Price who absolutely owned the pac-10?
Laughable.
