The Lions claimed kicker Justin Medlock off waivers from the Redskins on Tuesday. They will evaluate him next week when they wrap up off-season workouts with two organized team activities and a mandatory minicamp.
Medlock, whom the Chiefs drafted in the fifth round in 2007, played for the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts last season, going 40-for-46 on field goals. He was strong on kickoffs and also punted. He was expecting to sign with the Argos after the Redskins let him go.
But the Lions will consider keeping him for training camp. He could spell veteran Jason Hanson, who turns 40 on Thursday, and provide insurance. He also could be a kickoff specialist.

seriously
viewtopic.php?f=160&t=971943&start=255About three threads below this is a FA thread. I think stories about our new backup Kicker could go there, instead of a brand new one. I know its slow but come on

justin medlock was never a free agent the lions pick him off the waive wire before he can become one.
Fa thread is the wrong spot for Justin Medlock .
If you like i will make a new waiver wire thread which is the correct thread.
note example:A free agent means that person can choose which team they want to sign with that is not the case with justin.

Yep, definitely a wire pickup. Is only a couple years removed from being a 5th round pick, and he has always been a very talented kicker and he was the best kicker in Canada last year and was mentioned as one of the few bright spots of his whole team. Won't really give us much value though unless they were going to trade Hanson, cause Hanson still has plenty of solid years left in him.

The one thing i did not like on our special teams was on the kick off.our kicker would kick it to the 10-15 yard line and the opposing team word run it to the 35 and start from there.
We need a kicker that can hit the end zone our kickers rearly hit that.
Does justin also do kickoffs ?

word
And FWIW, on small tidbits like this, i think puting a waiver pickup in the FA thread would be ok. Especially for a backup kicker. Just my two cents

Early years
Medlock played football for the Mission San Jose High School Warriors as both a punter and a kicker. Justin was ranked ninth in the country and was all-county and all-league at both positions. He averaged 43.1 yards per punt as a punter and made 11 out of 19 field goals in his junior and senior years.
College career
Medlock attended UCLA where he set a UCLA career record with six 50 yard field goals, and was a four year letterman. Overall, he attempted 88 field goals and made 70 of them. He kicked 147 of 148 PATs

In his tryout he kicked 8 of 10 kickoffs out of the end zone on the fly. The other two went OOB though. He didn't make a FG beyond 52 yards but hit 11 of 12 inside there. At least that's what a Lions coach told me last night. He's got a real good chance to stick as the KOS as long as the reserve DBs/WRs can play special teams.

You dont just trade a player like Jason Hanson. Let him kick another year or two and retire a Lion...the guy has earned it. Medlock can be the KOS and that will be fine

For just a couple years left I don't think many teams would pay that much to get him anyhow, not much point in trying to squeeze out salvage value, but you still always have to keep that option in mind just in case, cause sometimes to get better you have to bite tough bullets. It's just really bad when you Favre away a good player and don't do it in a sensible way and at the right time.

So which coach do you know and can I get in on that action?

He's left footed if I recall correctly. I remember watching him in a college skills challenge.

Yeah and he kicked butt in that competition. I remember being very impressed with him and then not surprised that he was the first kicker drafted that year.

I also did well with him on Madden, when I drafted him to the Lions a few years ago...good sign.

Well, Justin Medlock has been released as well as an OG. Looks like two more signings are about to happen.

why did they do this ? same old lions
The Detroit Lions today waived kicker Justin Medlock and guard Kurt Quarterman.
The Lions had claimed Medlock, a left-footed placekicker and punter, off waivers from Washington on June 17. They had signed Quarterman to their practice squad in December

Does this really even matter? Lol @ same old Lions. It was a freaking kicker for Christ sakes. Jason Hanson could have 5 years left in him. Morten Anderson kicked til he was 46 or something like that. Kicker is the last of our worries.
In other news, Amari Spievay signed today. We have Spievay, Young, and Fox signed now. All that's left is Suh, Best, and Timmy Toone.

I agree with Kellmellus. The Lions are showing their true colors and proving why they will always be cellar dwellers. You don't just let go of hall of fame talent like Justin Medlock. I guess we'll all just have to watch his legendary performances in another uniform.
