Lions sign Bobby Carpenter

Post#1 » by Bartender » Thu Oct 21, 2010 1:46 pm

Former first round pick, if we can bring out our potential, then we have a complete steal. He is a stud in pass coverage. He just never seemed to be able to play like a linebacker and be aggressive.

Carpenter is one of those guys that looks like a better football player than he really is. One of my biggest misses as a scout unfortunately. He is good on ST coverage units and fills against the run reasonably well, so long as no blockers are near him. He's definitely worth the look, brings some size and he's strong in the locker room.

Both Todd McShay and Rob Rang at NFLDraftscout had Cody Wallace as a draft sleeper steal when he came out. He's looked real soft when he's played though.
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

First, when Lions general manager Martin Mayhew dealt receiver Roy Williams to the Dallas Cowboys two years ago, the Cowboys wanted to make Carpenter part of that deal and the Lions refused. Mayhew was adamant that he wanted draft picks instead and that's how it ended up

The claiming of Cody Wallace has its own intrigue because the Lions weren't really in the market for an interior lineman. The Lions don't have any significant injuries in that area and they appear happy with the versatility of Dylan Gandy, who serves as a backup at both guard and center.

Maybe the Lions believe that Wallace is just too good of a prospect to pass up. Or maybe the Lions, who play the Jets in a couple of weeks, would like to get a jump on some of the line calls

Let’s see what Bobby can do on the Lions D, this may be the system that works for him, some people play better in another system. Let’s see if this makes him the LB that makes him a star for the Lions. This may be his last stop so maybe he makes it count

PRO: Has appeared in 63 games with five starts during five NFL seasons. Took over the role as the team’s nickel linebacker in 2009, allowing him to boast career numbers at the position as he assumed a greater role in the Cowboys defense. Versatile linebacker who has the size and speed to be an effective run stopper and pass rusher while also displaying the ability to cover backs or tight ends in the passing game. Also a strong special teams performer throughout his career.

2010: Spent 2010 Training Camp with the St. Louis Rams before joining the Miami Dolphins for five games (2 starts).
•Started at MLB in season opener at Buffalo (9/12). Recorded one tackle and one special teams tackle. •Started second game of season at MLB at Min (9/17).
