Lions Trade for RB Ronnie Brown Voided

Post#1 » by Piston Pete » Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:15 pm

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inq- ... z1bALisXpU

The Eagles have traded out-of-favor running back Ronnie Brown to the Lions for Jerome Harrison and an undisclosed 2013 draft pick.

Harrison, an Eagles backup last year, has 14 carries for 41 yards this year in Detroit. Brown had fallen out of the running back rotation after a costly fumble against the 49ers.

More soon.

Found this as well: http://www.freep.com/article/20111018/S ... ext|Sports

The Detroit Lions, hard up for running backs depending on Jahvid Best's concussion status, were trying to pull off a trade for Philadelphia Eagles backup Ronnie Brown before today's 4 p.m. deadline, according to several tweets.

The Lions will give up running back Jerome Harrison and a seventh-round draft pick, according to espn.com's Adam Schefter.

Foxsports.com's Jay Glazer also tweeted that the teams were working on the deal.

Harrison played for the Eagles last season.

Brown was a first-round pick out of Auburn by the Miami Dolphins in 2005. This is his first season with the Eagles, for whom he has 13 carries and 38 yards. Harrison has 14 carries for 41 yards for the Lions.

^^Also states Harrison and a 7th rounder for Brown

It is a 2013 7th rounder + Jerome Harrison, confirmed it via the Eagles PR dept.

Love the move for the Lions, getting an upgrade for essentially nothing. Brown fits what the Lions will ask him to do, but he has to stay healthy himself.

Sounds like Best will be doubtful this week. Beyond that is anyone's guess.

Is it too soon to expect Brown to be ready for this Sunday?

Not to be a wet blanket on Brown, but I want to taper expectations:
--Brown has not rushed for more than 89 in a game since October 2009
--he has not carried the ball more than 20 times in a game since Week 16 of 2008
--career splits: carries 1-10 he averages 4.3 yards per carry, 11-15 4.9 ypc, 15+ 2.9 ypc. Career average is 4.3.
--he has caught just 44 of the last 91 balls thrown his way, though to be fair Miami had some real crap at QB in his career there.

To be fair, I don't expect him to carry the ball more than 15 times/week.

But I will agree that his past couple seasons have been pretty paltry and injury-ridden. I honestly don't expect much from him, but hope I am pleasantly surprised. He is a bigger (6', 230 lb), versatile back who could bring some power out of our backfield.

^To be fair

He played in miami, and the few times he did run, he looked like a power back that could break out at any moment. He's also extremely versatile. I'm stoked about this trade, we basically traded for nothing to fill a position of extreme need.

Concerns are his injury history, however who doesn't have a injury history. i think the we'll see a different lions team from here on out.

Anyone know what his contract looks like?

I say lets play him next week against the falcons and see how he does, thats the only way of finding out how good or bad he is.

1 year, 1 million (with some small incentives)

Given that it was a seventh rounder, this is a very nice no risk, medium reward trade. I'm also not expecting much as his whole career has been far from stellar (he was overrated in Miami because of one decent season and one decent game). But if he can run up the gut and fill in for Best where needed, I'm cool

Linehan was the OC in MIA his rookie year. So he should already know the offense pretty well.

That said, I think he plays Sunday. I think this is a huge upgrade. Not because I think he is a star, but because that's how bad our current RB's were. Even an average to solid RB is a huge upgrade.

I don't consider Best a RB. He's a receiver with great YAC ability to me. We just needed a consistent true RB, not a star. Someone to give us a consistant ground game just enough to keep the D honest for our pass game. I think we are getting that in Brown.

Remember, when Philly signed him, he was part of the whole "Dream Team" thing ppl were boasting about in pre-season, w/ them signing all those big FA's. They get off to a bad start, and all of a sudden he's nothing special? I think not.

I watched a video if his PHI presser when signed, and according to him, his injuries are a non-factor. His foot is 100% and his injured knee is even stronger than his other knee now, from putting in so much work on it. He joked he had to get the good knee up to par, lol.

I think this is a big pick-up. A high draft pick that still has a lot to prove looking to make a comeback, coming to a winning team with a dire need for his services. Those situations usually result in success. Kind of reminds me of an old Joe-D move. Getting a former top pick for cheap because other teams gave up on him.

I don't consider his age a factor either. 29 might be a little old for an everydown back, but he's split carries with Ricky Williams most of his career. Mileage is the measuring stick, not age.

He's only had 1141 carries in his career. By comparison, Adrian Peterson has 1320 thus far in his career.

I don't think anybody would say AP has too much mileage, and Brown has 200 less carries on his body. His injury takes a toll on that, but if he's fully recovered like he said, it shouldn't be much of a factor.

A. Samuels is apparently also up for grabs. What you guys think about acquiring him?

4pm was the end of all trades.

I read that too though, and wondered if Mayhew tried to get him too during talks with Philly.

Always a chance they could release him later in the season maybe.

Looking at his contract, I see why the Lions may have passed, as its huge.

I'd say there's a good chance they could release him, as Desean Jackson is up for a new deal, and they cant afford to pay 3 CB's starters money AND pay Jackson. Samuel seems the odd man out there at some point, and maybe we can claim him off waivers.

I like Harrison more. I like shifty guys with speed moreso than guys like Brown, and we have 2 guys that are non-spectacular athletes already in MM and Keiland. They should have given us the 7th rounder. This deal costs money and material and doesn't address our top list of needs. What a crappy day and another year of disappointment with a jacked up roster that just doesn't make sense. Oh well, there's always next year to luck out and get the personnel correct so that we can finally have a chance to be a legit 16-0 team (even though we should be a well-established bonafide 16-0 but I'm trying not to be picky because of the countless decades of failure). I just got home and logged on to see all the trade news... and now it's time for bed and to put this one behind me just like the rest of our failed experiments. Soon Week 18 will be here and we will be traveling to NY, fun indeed, but it could have been tremendously better and something really special.
