He's expected to compete with him for time.

I like the Morris move. I always thought it was crazy to think that Haynesworth might come here.

I read somewhere that speculated the Lions might look at Byron Leftwich as a no.2. I honestly wouldn't mind that is of course they don't draft a 1st day QB.

I don't honestly expect a whole lot out of this season. I mostly just don't want to see them spend $25 mil on a $10 mil free agent.

I doubt he'd come here, I also don't expect much, just a couple of wins. I agree with you on your last statement as well, I hope we don't over pay a free agent for the hell of singing him.

Bryant Johnson signs for 3 yrs/9 mill

The Detroit Lions added depth to their receiving corps, signing free-agent wide receiver Bryant Johnson to a three-year contract on Saturday.

The deal is worth $9 million, according to profootballtalk.com.

Johnson, a six-year veteran, will compete for a starting slot opposite standout receiver Calvin Johnson.

Man, I respect the hell out of Jason Hanson. Staying this long with this organization in this city... He's performed at a high level for such a long time. I only remember two Lions kickers in my entire lifetime - Hanson and Murray. It looks like he'll finish his career here. Hopefully we can reward him with another playoff appearance before he hangs it up. One can dream.

Detroit should sign Roy Williams (the safety from OU). Dallas released him today. He is still young and would provide some leadership to the defense.

I didn't see this posted so I thought I would add it.

Lions signed two new players, CB Phillip Buchanan and T Grady Jackson.

http://myespn.go.com/s/conversations/show/story/3953165

The Detroit Lions continued to upgrade their tattered secondary by reaching a two-year agreement with Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Phillip Buchanon. The 5-foot-11, 186-pound Buchanon agreed to a two-year, $8.5 million contract, according to a source.

http://myespn.go.com/s/conversations/show/story/3952674

Expected to be the interior anchor for the Detroit Lions defensive front, free-agent tackle Grady Jackson has reached a three-year agreement with the team.

The deal for Jackson, who played the past three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, is worth $8 million.

For several years, Jackson has been regarded as one of the best defensive lineman in the league against the run. Because off his size, conservatively listed at 345 pounds, Jackson usually commands double-team blocking. He played in the 370s for Atlanta last year, but a source said he weighed 349 pounds at the Detroit physical.

Thoughts?

Well one thing is for sure...signing Buchanan and Jackson won't hurt the defense. I remember when Buchanan was drafted in 2002, I was hoping the Lions would trade down and pick him up.

Grady Jackson sucks!! Buchanan is an ok edition!

what we NEED to do is resign Leigh Bodden and go for Igor Olshansky or tank johnson!
NOT Grady Jackson!

Per Wiretap, Lions agree to 1 yr deal with 27 yr old OL Daniel Loper who played last season with the Titans. Looks like Mayhew is active in free agency, which is a good sign.

Seems the Lions are trying to round up guys who will not only sign for cheap, but will be active in trying to prove themselves and earn a starting spot, like Loper mentioned.

Let's hope that drive motivates the rest of the team.

Hopefully the motivation will be there to not be the worst team in the league this year. This team has something to prove and it seems like the guys that are being picked up fit that mentality. If this team can stay away from injuries, it should be better than last year just for the fact the attitude will be different.

I am actually impressed that Mayhew is picking up players that are still young enough to be effective and has gone after players who are hungry and motivated. Let's just hope the motivation shows up on the field.

BTW, L.J. Smith hasn't ruled out signing with the Lions per wiretap.

We need a TE real real bad. LJ Smith would be smart

Come on the Lions signed Will Heller. I've never heard of him, but 36 catches in 70 career games...

On a sidenote, is it wrong that I think the Lions should take a chance on Matt Jones?

Smith has agreed to sign with the Ravens.

I don't know much about Heller. From what I read, he's more of an insurance policy at TE, even with our hole there. If he can do anything for us at all, it'll be a surprise.
