Preseason game 3: Indianapolis Colts @ Detroit Lions

Post#1 » by Liqourish » Wed Aug 26, 2009 6:37 pm

Saturday @ 1pm, televised game will be delayed on WWJ after the game is finished. But I'm sure you could look on-line for a live feed.

Calvin Johnson and Brandon Pettigrew worked out with the team and both said they feel great and hope to play Saturday.

Schwartz hasn't yet named the starting QB for the game.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Stanton start just to throw the Colts defense off LOL

Plus it's his turn if Coach wants to be able to honestly say he's fostering a legitimate competition for the most important position on the team.

Stanton isnt in the running though. Its Culpepper or Stafford...you know that.

word.

This is the game that the starters will play the most in, so some progress would be nice. Hopefully Matt is a little calmer and looks sharp. And im praying Peyton doesnt shred our secondary like i fear he could

I heard Buchanon and Henry are "questionable". So our 2ndry will have their work cut out for them. I'm most interested in getting a look at Roberson, he has a little intrigue, this weekend will be a big test for him.

Played well so far. Our defensive line looks alot better than the last game. Penalties are killing us. Only reason Indy scored was because of a penalty that put them on the 1 yard line.

Stafford looks good. Culpepper looks good. Pettigrew had a come good runs. Kevin Smith is our running game. He's been the guy this game so far. Also, Aaron Brown has returned our KR and got us in good position.

Have the 10-7 lead at halftime, let's hope for a good 2nd half.

DeAndre Levy with the big tackle to stop Indys run and force them to punt. This kid is impressing me big time. I wasn't expecting much from him this year, but if this is what he can give us, he's going to get alot of playing time.

Lions need to score here.

Stafford and Derrick Williams are having a nice day playing catch. Williams should make a case for himself being the 3rd/4th receiver. Kids got good speed, and good vision, just wish he could absorb contact a little more. Hopefully he'll gain that in time.

going to the 4th quarter, I hope Stafford gets a couple more snaps.

Looked like the group pushed him into the endzone but refs moved the ball back short of a touchdown, goddammit.

^ I agree, to me, they are both fighting tooth and nail for it. At this point, as long as both play, I don't care who starts. I don't want to see Staffords development stunted though. I don't want to see him benched the first few games. Get him in there and throwing to CJ, Brown, Williams, Pettigrew, KSmith and let them learn each others moves. It can only help us down the line.

I love Manning telling the media that he is the QB he is because he was allowed to play and make mistakes right away. Especially since it's the media that is trying to dictate Stafford sitting on the sidelines.

The thing I've noticed in this preseason is the timing of the O-Line, besides a couple of time, the O-line has really given every QB enough time to make plays. Whether those plays work or not is up to the QB and targets, but the O-line has improved, you can see it.

DeAndre Levy had another wonderful game. I don't think he'll start the season, but he might be a starter by the end of the season with the way he's playing.

In fact, all of our rookies have looked good out there. Follett had that massive tackle with the special teams, Gronkowski had the 2pt conversion, Williams/Brown have looked GREAT, Delmas/Pettigrew will improve with more time. Stafford looks ready now. We haven't seen much of Hill, but according to the coaches, he's really impressed them even though he's a project. We really have a chance to see 6-7 of the rookies have rotation roles and stick around for the long haul. When's the last time we could say that?

It's been a LOOOOOONNNNGGGG time. I must admit, when I saw Stafford throw it long to Calvin Johnson down the middle.... I got excited for the future. Then he threw to Derrick Williams and Brandon Pettigrew and I knew we had real building blocks in place for this team.

Not a great team, not an elite team, not even a contending team, but a real foundation, which I haven't seen in Detroit in years.

future pieces:

Offense:
QB: Matthew Stafford/Drew Stanton
WR: Calvin Johnson/Derrick Williams/Demir Boldin
RB: Kevin Smith/Aaron Brown
FB: Jerome Felton
TE: Brandon Pettigrew/Carson Butler/Dan Gronkowski
OT: Gosder Cherilus/Lydon Murtha

Defense:
LB: Ernie Sims/DeAndre Levy/Zack Follett
DE: Andre Fluellen/Cliff Avril
DT: Sammie Hill/Landon Cohen/Ikaika Alama-Francis
CB: Ramzee Robinson
S: Louis Delmas/Stuart Schweigert

Special Teams:
KR/PR: Aaron Brown/Derrick Williams
K: (RIP SWAYZE WATERS =*-( )

Now obviously, not all these players will pan out to their ceiling and not all will stick around, but it's a nice young group to build on. There is finally a direction and blueprint for the team.

couple of questions but nothing that can't be filled with upcoming drafts and free agency.

draft Russel Okung (OT Oklahoma State) and that would solve our LT position and we are able to move Backus to LG where he would be dominant. If we are better than expected and slip to around the 10th spot, Trent Williams (OT Alabama) is a possibility. But I would be thrilled if we were able to grab Okung. He should have more buzz to him but he loses focus a lot playing (bored with competition??)
Definitely a franchise LT.

anyways, Taylor Mayz would be a GREAT compliment to Luis Delmas if we decide to go defense. Ndamukong Suh (DT Nebraska) is a top five pick who's freakishly athletic and strong but injury prone. Terrence Cody could work behind Grady and learn the ropes and be a pro bowl NT one day down the road.

Draft option are definitely there now that we don't need to draft a QB or WR.

Free Agency.. we could pick up OL off free agency like Jahri Evans and Marcus McNeill. D-line could be solidified if we pull in Julius Peppers or Aaron Kampman. Elvis Dumervil is a target i'd like to aim for as well. Now we need someone to take Larry Footes place. SHAWN MERRIMAN!!!!! CB is a big hole for us and there's a lot of CB's I would like to have in Detroit. For instance, Ellis Hobbs and Marlin Jackson.

Detroit is looking like a FA destination more and more every year. 3 years and we're on top of the division.
