STATEMENT REGARDING QB DAUNTE CULPEPPER
Detroit Lions QB Daunte Culpepper sustained a minor cut to his toe at his home Saturday evening. The injury, which required eight stitches, is not considered serious. Culpepper will not practice today and his status for Thursday’s game will be determined later this week.

The team also announced that they have placed CB Dexter Wynn on reserve/injured and have released the following players: WR D.J. Boldin, LB Rob Francois, S LaMarcus Hicks and DE Ryan Kees.

Hate to see Boldin go, he had a few good plays even though he didn't see much time.

Culpepper could miss out the final preseason game. Hope the injury isn't severe. 8 stitches isn't too bad, but you don't know where on his toe he got cut. Could affect his movement in the pocket.

That makes Stafford's job a lot more safe :(

I was hoping to see Culpepper go out there and lead our new team. He looks like he did in Minnesota

^ Funny, I thought about telling you the same thing.

If Lions go after anyway, I hope it's Duckett.

New update:

Detroit Lions QB Drew Stanton sustained a minor left knee injury during Saturday’s game against Indianapolis. Stanton is visiting Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., today and will undergo an arthroscopic procedure. Further information will be provided as warranted.

The Lions also announced today that they have signed free agent QB Brooks Bollinger and released G Terrence Metcalf.

QB Daunte Culpepper is still on a day-to-day basis after suffering a toe injury at his home last Saturday.

Lions claimed Kevin O'Connell off of waivers. Daunte isn't expected to play Thursday. Stanton is out indefinitely. Stafford should start.

Stafford is certainly going to start. Minor knee surgery for Stanton could be bad. He has been injured alot.

Here is MLives thoery on why grabbing O'Connel and Bollinger:

The Lions don't know the extent of Stanton's recovery time (he's having arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday) and, if it's going to be significant, the Lions can put Stanton on injured reserve and keep O'Connell as the No. 3.

It's also possible the Lions have liked O'Connell all along and want to take a long look at him. If that's the case, the Lions can have the best of both worlds and put Stanton on IR, keep O'Connell at No. 3 and then go into next season with those two competing to be Matthew Stafford's backup (Daunte Culpepper becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season).

Or, the Lions plan to keep four quarterbacks on the roster for the first couple weeks and they believe O'Connell is an upgrade over Bollinger. Or, they plan to keep Stanton on the active roster and simply want to get a good look at O'Connell for a few days

Any way you slice it, it's a good pick up.

Stanton has looked good this preseason. I hope the injuries don't keep up. I'd like to see him play a little football before his career ends.

I get the OConnell signing, but Bollinger is a puzzler. Anyone who knows even a little about football can tell you he's not an NFL QB and his upside is long reached. He's kind of like Stanton, except not as young and not as dynamic.

The beatie I talked to expects Stanton to at least get PUP, meaning he's out 6 weeks. No chance they keep 4 QBs so either Bollinger or OC has to go...unless there is a deal in the works for Culpepper. I'm not saying, just sayin'...

I think Mayhew is stockpiling QBs to use as trade bait at the very least. It seems teams are looking for QBs left and right, right now. I don't think Bollinger is sticking around. Just playing the final preseason game so that Culpepper can rest for the opener.

Would keep an eye on the waiver wire. I expect Mayhew to pick up whatever talent is cut. Lions still have a number of positions they need to upgrade badly.
