In two games, we've seen two blatant BS calls against a Calvin Johnson run and both times it's stagnanted our offense.

First the "out of bounds" call and now this imaginary chopping call on Cherilus. I know it's the Lions and no one cares. But that was a touchdown Stafford/CJ got robbed on and now a 43yd run Stafford/CJ got robbed on. Stafford has looked good throwing to Calvin, but they just keep getting taken away.
Jeff Backus didn't even look at Jared Allen on the outside until he sacked Stafford. That was his man and he didn't even look at him, let alone get his hands on him and protect his QB. That is just inexcusable. And it's not the first time Backus has done it. It's time for him to go. I don't want him at another position, I want him gone. And this doesn't even include his penalty that cost us a run in 2nd quarter on a good run by Kevin Smith.
To start the 3rd quarter, Stafford got sacked twice because "teammates" didn't want to do their job. We end up punting, Vikings get downfield and get a field goal. Next possession, Kevin Smith fumbles the ball, Vikings recover it, and they end up scoring a touchdown. 10-7 lead becomes a 17-10 deficit. Lions never got back into it.
These are careless mistakes not only by Stafford and his interceptions which some fans will rant on about non stop, but our offensive lineman aren't doing their job and the defense didn't show up after halftime.
Don't get me wrong, I applaud our defense for that first half. They were LIGHTS OUT!! Larry Foote, Jason Hunter, Louis Delmas, Julian Peterson, Grady Jackson, Andre Fluelllen, Ernie Sims, and Dewayne White weren't messing around. Especially Foote and Hunter.
We need better CBs. Once Peterson realized once he got outside he could run at will, he did. Including a 27yd TD. Because our CBs couldn't cover him.
I know the Lions want to run more, but I think the Vikings knew the play was to Kevin Smith on the right side every damn play. They weren't the best rushing defense in the league for no reason. It was time to throw the ball and they didn't. You have Calvin freakin' Johnson on the team. Throw it up to him and let him make plays. I don't get what's so hard about this. I respect wanting a run game. But you have to know when to run and when to throw. And in the second half when you weren't getting anything on the ground, it was time to play catch.
I did see some good things in this game though. Jason Hunter and Larry Foote were GREAT additions. Brandon Pettigrew showed some good blocking skills to open a few lanes for Smith to get through. He also had a couple good catches. I like his size and strength at TE. Louis Delmas is a beast. He had a number of good tackles and almost got another interception on defense. He just couldn't hold onto the ball, but he did stop the run. He was all over the field pressuring guys. I really like this kid. And I like Staffords poise. Yeah he threw an interception, but he went right back out and tackles Greenway to stop a TD. In the no huddle shotgun, he kept his guys alert and kept the ball moving. He needs to learn when to hold the ball and when to throw it away though. But I think he'll learn that the more he plays.
We had control half the game. it's a step in the right direction. we just got to stop the careless mistakes and upgrade a few positions.
