A 6th rounder and 5th round swap for CB Chris Houston, of the Atlanta Falcons?

Thoughts?

Houston, 25, was a second-round pick out of Arkansas in 2007. The 5-foot-11, 178-pounder has started 37 regular-season games and intercepted three passes in his career. He became expendable after the Falcons signed free agent Dunta Robinson.

The Lions had the NFL’s worst pass defense last season and have a huge hole at cornerback. They cut Phillip Buchanon and let Will James and Anthony Henry hit the market as unrestricted free agents.

General manager Martin Mayhew talked to the Chargers about a trade for Antonio Cromartie, who eventually went to the Jets. The Lions also reportedly will host free agent Jonathan Wade, whom the Rams drafted in the third round in 2007 when Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan was their head coach

As long as he's not above the nickel CB, he'll be fine. He's one of those high-effort players that just isn't physically big enough to handle the tougher assignments. The price is right.

So is Wade officially a Lion or is that still in the early stages?

Right now we jut have Houston right?

Not too bad of a deal. He's young, let's see what he can do.

I'm still holding out hope for Marlin Jackson and/or William Gay

I just want us to draft a CB or two. Get some guys that can come in and develop for the next few years. Houston was cheap (I'm told around 550K) and we didn't give up much to get him. Good signing, but we still need more help there.

Ice, I think that you're wrong. lol. Sorry. But I think he would make a FINE #2 for us and slide Will James to the nickle. He didn't fit Falcons defense cuz they are a zone coverage defense and he is a man-on-man press shut down corner. That's what he does and that's what he does VERY good. I remember this guy at the combine. Only 180 pounds at 5'9", ran a 4.3 official and put up 27 reps on the bench press. This guy will soar in Cunningham's defense. People were saying he is like glue when in man coverage. Atlanta just don't use that type of coverage and he failed in zone.

And to add to that, I would MUCH rather have Houston for a 6th then Cromartie for a 3rd. We'll be getting the same production.

Cheap enough and young, so i am cool with it. The kid started a ton in Atlanta too, so he will be ready to play as much as needed. nice deal

^ is was Cromartie for a 5th. If you're going to argue a point, at least present the actual facts man. I love ya Bar, but you're frustrating me with this 3rd for Cro talk. :P Jets got him for a 3rd next year, our deal was for a 5th this year.

I'm in agreement with Bar about Houston being a man-to-man defender. He's not suited for the Tampa 2, he'll be a better fit in Cunninghams defense scheme. I don't think he's a shut down defender and am not expecting a pro-bowl season from him.... but he is better than any CB that was on our roster last year and is very cheap and young. I'd still want to go after a CB in the second round though. Kyle Wilson or Devin McCourty would be great in our secondary.

Listen, until Mayhew comes out and says it was for a 5th and Morris, then I'm not buying it...... especially because there is absolutely NO reason that Chargers would want Morris.

Mayhews not going to come out and talk about trades that didn't happen. Eeveryone with knowledge of the talks knows it was a 5th rounder (#148 to be exact), Chargers than wanted Morris added in and the Lions said no. Just because you don't agree with those details doesn't change the facts.

Until Myahew says that's what it was, then it is ONLY speculation. There are no facts until it comes out of the mouths of the people involved. It was "reportedly" Thomas Jones that was going to SD until the "FACTS" came out that it was for a 2011 3rd round pick.

See how speculation works?

We know that we aren't willing to just give away picks... and we know that SD was looking for a runningback, so reporters put 2 and 2 together and tried to make a 5th + Morris make sense of the trade.

ESPN speculated that Kampman and Boldin were getting interest from Detroit but after both ended up with other teams, we find out that Detroit had no contact with either of them ever.

I heard it was a future 7th rounder...

see how speculation works?

Seriously though, all reports were in line with what Liq is saying....5th for Cro, then the Chargers asked for Morris as well, and we backed out....

Like the Houston deal....would have loved it if we had Cromartie here as well. I disagree that we're going to get a better CB than Cro in the draft.

It was just reports and it was only one article that I've EVER seen that said Morris was involved. And if you want to go by what reports say, then you'd know that SD would have no interest in Morris. They have "reportedly" been said to want a power running system with Sproles as their change of pace back. Why in the world would they want Maurice Morris if reports were true? It's not so much that we backed out. It's more like I refuse to believe that it was Morris that they wanted. He just don't fit their system and he's not even very good.

And speaking of good, profootball says that Houston has had a better two years then Cromartie has had. I am VERY content with Houston rather then Cromartie. Neither are #1 CB's, and Houston is a fraction of the cost. Winner winner.

I just wish we had both....

Morris is more of a power runner - not Bettis, obviously - but he runs hard. He's been pretty consistant over at least the last 2 years (1 in Seattle and 1 here) in getting good yardage after initial contact.

I'm confused, because reports are saying they asked for Morris. Other than your misconception that Morris isn't more of a power runner than Sproles, what basis do you have to state the reports are false?

What GM would let go of Ladainian Tomlinson and then 'settle' for Maurice Morris? I see them wanting Kevin Smith due to being younger.... but Morris is aging and not really a power back at all.

KS is now reporting that the deal is done but the terms have changed. Apparently, we traded this years 6th round pick and a conditional 7th next year.

Does that mean we didn't end up swapping 5ths? :)
