It all comes back to where you want the program to be. If you want to try and contend for a national title, you emphasize a modern offense. See where it ends up. Might not work. And if you want a 9-3 team that blows out crap programs but will only be ranked between #10-20 you go back to Barry’s world.

I think part of the issue is teams will pay top notch linemen and take them away from us.

Then on the other side, our top notch line + modest skill position players can’t beat the **** out of Purdue’s unpolished sophomore lineman anymore, because Purdue has an All-Mountain West senior transfer in his place nowadays.

We also play a way tougher schedule now.

I think the 9-3 path is dead. I was the 9-3 team appreciator for decades. Can’t do it anymore, at least not consistently.

Like I said earlier - I don’t think I’m going to see many more highly competitive Badger teams in my lifetime…no matter which route they try.

Then CFB will just die. If consistently good teams like Wisconsin have no chance than who really does besides the 8-10 teams that spend millions a year.

We can occasionally contend when we happen to land a transfer QB that explodes once in a decade, but correct - consistent success is now out the window.

MLB and premier league do well with imbalanced spending, I guess. Nobody will care that Wisconsin is an afterthought when they get like 8 marquee playoff games between Texas, OSU, LSU, whatever to close the year.

it's like college football kept all the slime but lost all the tradition. I don't see the point in watching amateur football when the NFL is one 4 nights a week

I mean, I understand we looked poopy and have looked poopy for 3-4 straight years, but quitting on the entire sport because we only beat a MAC team by 2 TDs seems odd.

I don't think anyone quit because of one game. But college football has changed so much and not in a good way imo. I can see why people will give it a pass. I have much less interest than I used to. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

This game looks even worse when you compare it to what Nebraska, Purdue, and Rutgers did in their games. Losing record seems likely this season.

We have an absolutely brutal schedule in ‘24 and ‘25 and between the final Chryst years + these 2 cannot find any one that can get a sack/cause havoc on the line post-Benton/Herbig. We have to up our game and we have zero playmakers other than Pauling. Chez is good but has some iffy vision.

It’s a major hill to climb.

It's crazy that Evers, Mertz, & Hill were all 4 star recruits.

To be honest, if you go through the list of four star guys by year most don't turn out to be anything.

He had a reputation as a high quality QB guru of sorts. Couldn’t understand it for the life of me. His record after Tolzien was absolutely despicable.

And no, Russell Wilson walking in in mid July and being really good as a senior was not because of Paul Chryst.

Hornibrook & Jack Coan both turned into pretty solid college QBs. Mertz was definitely didn't live up to expectations though

Chryst wasn’t making miracles but until the end did OK by Wisconsin standards for QB.

I see Ohio St. plays Western Michigan this weekend. I expect a 49-10 type score.

Prepare to be disappointed.

You are arguing that a RS-freshman/sophomore version of Mabrey Mettauer - rated lower as a recruit than Mertz, Deacon Hill, and "To be honest, if you go through the list of four star guys by year most don't turn out to be anything" (in your own words) is going to meet the raised standards of the program that people had dreamed should happen for for basically 2000-2020 or whatever.

That or the transfer portal which has netted us guys in the Jack Coan/Alex Hornibrook ballpark in terms of performance.
