Russ Adams

Post#1 » by TR50 » Thu Apr 12, 2007 8:23 pm

First off, wanna say i'm extremely excited about this new Blue Jay board, have been reading throughout the days and now i decided to get onto the posting board :P

Well what i wanna discuss is Russ Adams, me being a lazy old fart and not a baseball encyclopedia but just a very big Jays fan and a couple other teams, I wanna know how he's doing in the minors, he is playing 2B right?

The first couple times i saw Adams play, i was thinking "Boy, he's gonna be good" but boy, was a bit off. He started last year and obviously struggled, he hit alot of fly ball out which may be a good thing to build up power but he never really did much offensively nor defensively to make me think this guy is an everyday starter.

I Still am a a believer of him and i think has has the potential to be a solid everyday player and a good mid-late hitter in the lineup.

So my main question is what do you see him doing in the future for the Jays, how are the Jays going to use him and how much potential and how good will he really be? I remember hearing that it is a possibility we move Aaron Hill (who i think is just marvelous and i never thought he'd be such a great hitter already) back to SS and Russ being our 2B....it's a possibility.

So what are your opinions on him?

Russ Adams is pretty terrible. He's not a bad option for second base, but we already have Hill there, and Aaron loses some value if you move him over to short to make room for Russ.

To me, its absolutely incredible how he changed from his rookie season (where he was in top 5 for ROY voting I believe) to last season when he looked way in over his head. I saw what I thought was a lot of promise in that rookie season, and would love for him to find that groove again. But what I thought was promise may very well be overachievement.

Adams was sent down in late-May last season despite hitting .306/.386/.490 in May (49 at bats) after a poor April. He was sent down sporting a decent .258/.316/.383 line on the year. He was then brought back up, sent back down, brought back up, etc. Never got consistent MLB at bats last season.

I think he can be a solid MLB 2B. In the mold of Adam Kennedy. With Hill here, I doubt Adams will present much value to the Jays unless they move Hill to short. My guess is Adams is sent to Oakland at some point, and he develops nicely over there.

Adams was never sent down because of his offence. He committed an error basically every other time he touched the ball.

He was the same exact player defensively in 2005 when they gave him an entire season at short. It was Ricciardi's fault for not realizing Adams' defensive problems before the '06 season.

Adams is struggling so far offensively, hitting .194 to date. This guy does have offensive ability. I think some of the problems are mental. He likely doesn't have a lot of confidence right now. Hoping he can get it together, but not holding my breath....

Players can start out in slumps....see Mottola and Barker too....look at JFG...he's hitting at a career clip...won't put too much into the numbers...

One guy to look at is Dustin McGowan.

Having started 2 games, he has a 0.90 ERA, 17K's in 10IP, 3 BB and only 1 ER.

I'm hearing good things about Curtis Thigpen also....so I'm keeping my fingers crossed

so we should value pitching statistics in the minor leagues and not offensive stats?

if you're gonna tell us to watch out for McGowan, atleast tell us what the hell he's changed, worked on, improved, or figured-out... or atleast why his delivery looks so good or whatever now - i'm not a fan of this ovverated prospect - Rosario looked to me like he has a better chance of succeeding in the MLB

just look at the stats...pretty simple...he's almost got a 6 to 1 K/BB ratio, and he's only allowed 10 hits in 17IP....he's started out great.

I take pitching more into account because one guy could have an 0 for game it's screw his numbers up. Pitching ERA is the same, but McGowan's two starts I think came up against 2 of the better AAA teams. But I guess we'll see when this fades away.
