Report: Pack offer Favre $20 million to stay home

What about the affects that this is going to have on the Salary? The Packers offering Favre this incentive deal will not be dismissed from the Team Salary, as its money used to 'benefit' the team. But, I guess paying money which can be used to improve the roster, on not having a Pro Bowl QB on your team is the best way to spend 2 mil a year.

If Favre is a retired player, he's just another employee. The 2 million a year doesn't count against the cap.

In the paper today it said Elway and Marino had the same type of deals and the marketing package isn't all that uncommon. Why wouldn't a team try and keep it's old star associated with the team? The only difference is we don't know much about those other deals because these other players didn't run to the media blabbing and twisting things all in an attempt to try and make the team look bad. It also says the deal isn't tied to Favre not playing. Sounds to me like people are trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

That seems very odd to me. I guess I'm wrong about it.

They'll never force the Packers to include any Favre payments to the salary cap. That is just wishful thinking by some mischievous other teams whispering in a reporters ear.

That would be an impossible rule to enforce and have wide ranging ramifications for a number of teams and a number of situations.

It would also present the problem of forcing Roger Goodell to determine "intent". How could he say that the "intent" was to keep Brett off the field versus simply presenting Brett with an alternate off the field job that he could weigh out versus playing football. Guys have those decisions all the time when they are in retirement or weighing retirement. You are allowed to compare your off the field opportunities versus your on the field opportunities and make a choice as to what you want to do. If Brett chooses off the field opportunities, case closed. If he wants to play, he comes back on the cap.

ESPNEWS says

Brett Favre is considering rejecting Packers' marketing deal to stay retired in favor of seeking reinstatement and reporting to training camp, ESPN's Ed Werder reports.

Wendi Nix reports that Goodell is getting tired of the situation and plans to make a move on the reinstatement on Monday.

Conflicting Favre reports on NFL.com

Green Bay - The National Football League's website, NFL.com, had a video posted a short time ago with a report by Adam Schefter that Brett Favre was "preparing to stay retired" by accepting the marketing deal proposed by the Green Bay Packers.

However, there is no longer any mention of the report or the video on NFL.com's homepage. A snapshot of the video and a description was available by searching the site, but when trying to access the video, a error message - the page no longer exists -- came up. A search now turns up no mention of the report.

As of 6 p.m., a scrolling message on the bottom of the NFL Network's feed of the Hall of Fame enshrinements touting Schefter's report read as follows:

"Adam Schefter reports Brett Favre is preparing to stay retired. The decision is not final and could change but Favre is clearly leaning towards taking a package that he and the Packers have been negotiating."

The news is presently still scrolling.

The video of Schefter's report appears to have been replaced by an interview he did this afternoon with Roger Goodell, in which the NFL's commissioner commented on the Favre situation. Here is the crux of that interview:

"Both parties are talking, the Green Bay Packers and Brett and I think the discussions are moving ahead. I would hope we'll have something resolved by Monday.?

(Why Monday?) Because I think we have to force it. I think it's come to the point where there needs to be some decisions made on the behalf of the Packers, on behalf of Brett and on behalf of all the fans.

(Does Favre have to say he wants to play first before reinstatement?) It starts primarily with, does Brett want to play football? The second is do the Packers want him to play for the Packers? Those are the two principle points that have to be resolved and only the two parties can make those determinations. Not me.

(Do you have a prediction for how this might end?) I don't know. I think they are being reasonable. There are difficult emotional issues and they're important to the future of both of them. Brett has a great legacy and the Packers have a great franchise that they're trying to move forward with. I think they're trying to balance that in a way that is responsible to each party.
