Favorite Single Favre Moments

Post#1 » by Bernman » Thu Aug 7, 2008 3:44 pm

Even though I've been one of the bigger Favre critics for his play later in his career, now that he's finally departed Green Bay the moment is a little bittersweet. I am appreciative of all the great moments #4 has provided myself and fellow Packer fans over the years. These are my favorites and I hope this will be a platform for others to share their own in order to pay tribute to one of the greatest QB's ever.

(Ironically two of my three favorite involved the legs of the man more known for his cannon arm.)

- The go for broke scramble on the final play against the Falcons to catapult the Packers into the playoffs in '94. The majority of QB's in that situation play it safe, throw the ball away, and live to fight another day; even though they figure they can probably still make it. Sometimes you have to be willing to die in order to live in sports and Favre lived by that motto.

- Favre's 30-40 yard scamper down the sidelines for a TD on Halloween that same year against the Bears, culminated by a clumsy dive over a defender into the end zone. Almost undoubtedly Favre's longest run of his career, and during a game in which the Packers needed it the most. Monsoon like conditions made it almost impossible to pass.

- Favre ignores doctor's orders to remain on the sideline due to a concussion, sneaks onto the field, and proceeds immediately to throw a 30-yard fade to Javon Walker for a TD against the Giants in '04. Probably not the smartest idea but illustrated Favre's intense will to win once the game began and showed how playing quarterback was almost second nature to him at this point.

Here's a brilliant Brett Favre video mix to enhance everyones reminiscing experience: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8kQpP1YdmI

The Raiders game was by far my favorite moment. I just remember the media coverage up until that game, all the "how will Favre react" questions, and then he comes out and there is ridiculous play after ridiculous play made, many by the WR's just making unbelievable catches.

The throw to Freeman that bounced off his back for the completion that beat the Vikings.

99 yard TD to Brooks.

SB TD pass to Rison.

Two 70+ yard bombs, including the OT winner vs. the Broncos.

Favorite: 1998 - Lambeau Field v. Tampa Bay in September. This was when Tampa was ascending and we were descending. Bitter feuds all around as we beat them in the playoffs the year prior.

Favre is getting relentless pressure......I think it was Regan Upshaw who completely blindside drilled Favre. Favre went down....didn't get up for awhile. Finally he comes around, goes back into the huddle and throws a TD pass. I swear he couldn't see at the time from a concussion but he made the play. And of course taunted Upshaw and Sapp afterwards before collapsing on the bench.

Second favorite: Opening day 1999.....no time left.....Favre launches that 30 yard rainbow to Corey Bradford for the TD and win over Denny Green, Randy Moss, Cris Carter, etc.

-Freeman grab vs. Vikings

-Monday night game where Beebe got up and kept running during comeback vs. SF on Monday night in '96 (a little bit more of a team memory).

-Pass to Sharpe to beat Lions
This was one of the first memories I have of watching the Packers. I was 6 at the time I think. Maybe 7. I remember a few vague parts of the Majik Man era.

-Said Halloween run vs. Bears

-Pass to Rison in SB

Now this has me all nostalgic. I might have to pull out my '96 highlight VHS tonight. When Howard runs that one punt back and another down to the 5 vs. SF with the dramatic music in the background I am almost always near tears.

See, I've watched every Packer game during Favre's career (and back until a few years before), and I don't even clearly recall those plays. Good ones....that proves there were so many. I always loved the good natured smack between Sapp and Favre and missed that once they left our division.

Great topic. If I can expand my moment to encompass an entire game, my favorite Favre moment was the Packers' 1995 playoff win over the defending-champion 49ers, 27-17. Favre was simply brilliant in an electric, hostile road playoff environment, going 21 of 28 (75%) for 299 yards, 2 TDs and no picks. The game represented a coming of age moment for both Favre and the Packers, who proved that they belonged among the NFL's elite teams of the time, the Niners and Cowboys. After that day I was certain Favre was a championship caliber QB and that it was only a matter of time before the Packers won a Super Bowl.

I was at this game. My Grandpa took my brother and me (ages 9 and 11 at the time) on one of those package deal trips they used to offer in the Journal out there. I shaved a G on one side of my head and a 4 on the other and got on every local news outlet. One of my fondest childhood memories.

I remember right away Craig Newsome picking up a fumble and scoring and silencing the crowd. Great game.

I wasn't there, but for many years my VHS (VCR? I can't remember anymore) tape of that game was a prized possession. I think I cried when the tape broke. Kudos to you for your haircut, too bad I can't rewind and look for you.

How about the one where he broke about 4 tackles and ran back and forth across the field about 2-3 times and finally flipped it to Dorsey in the end-zone for a short TD vs. Seattle in '96.

I might have a VCR tape of it. Just moved though, so I may never find it.

That was great.

Definitely the Raiders game, and the comeback against the Bengals in 1992 also gets some consideration.

In the Raiders game, there was a TD pass to Wesley Walls that was the most beautifully thrown ball I have ever seen. It was maybe 2 inches over the outstretched hands of the Raider defender, and landed right in Walls' bread basket.

I was at the final game at County Stadium. I will always remember Favre beating the Falcons in the last minute with a scramble to the endzone. Great memory for an eleven year old.

I was at a couple of those games. The Atlanta county stadium one,The concusion one, and the one against Minny that he threw it to Bradford for the win. Tho I think the best game i ever went to was last year against seatle in the playoffs. That **** was awesome.

-The across his body TD pass to Sharpe to beat the Lions in the 93 playoffs. Just an exciting and spectacular play that really endeared me to Brett as a 6 year old.

-The pass to Rison in the Super Bowl...I still get chills when I watch it and hear Summerall calling the play. Watching Brett run to the sidelines with his helmet off is wonderful.

-The pass to Jennings to beat the Broncos...I know his was just last season but it was such an amazing and stunning play. That'll stick with me forever.

-The aforementioned Corey Bradford touchdown pass.

-The 2002 victory over the Ravens...Favre was impeccable in that game.

More to come...

Yeah, it was definitely a miracle that pass was completed. Favre rolled in an unnatural direction and had to float that ball over a defender who was in blanket coverage while also throwing with some velocity because Walls was only a couple yards from the back of the end zone. That pass had to be perfect, and it was, on a night where everything needed to go perfectly.

Favre also made an amazing bullet throw to Bill Schroeder against a cover 2 defense early this decade. I can't remember the exact year or the opponent. He had about a 6-inch gap to fit the ball into but that didn't deter him whatsoever. The only QB in the NFL who could have made that throw. Hey, how did Bill Schroeder fare after he left Green Bay? :)

Here's a new Favre mix from the same creator as the one in my OP: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea ... D=27803938

-Pass to Jennings in OT this year.

Um, more to come. Can't really think right now.

One of my greatest Favre memories was the Bengals game in '92 when Favre came off the bench even though I actually missed the game winning TD.

I was watching the game but it was a boring game and I wasnt quite as die-hard at 14 as I am now so I decided to go to my room and do some homework, well about an hour later and I remember this like it was yesterday I hear my dad and step-mom screaming like crazy. My step mom was cooking dinner and I thought maybe something happened like maybe she spilled boiling water on herself or something.

So I come running out all freaked out like ''oh no what happened'' .Turned out they where just screaming because the Packers scored a last second TD.

The only reason I even remember all of this is probably because I was so freaked out at all the screaming and yelling because I nor did anyone else know obviously at that time that Brett Favre just launched his HOF carrer.

The game winner to Sharpe in the '93 playoffs is a great memory, its weird looking back because I remember it was actually kind of surreal seeing the Packers win a playoff game. The franchise has come a long way since then.

Other ones that come to mind, not nessacarily big games for Favre but memorable ''Favre era'' games.

'94' the mini hurricane monday nighter,I remember as it was downpouring in Chicago with big winds it was calm with no rain in Milwaukee.

'95 Steelers game when Thigpen dropped the ball.

96' MNF 49ers OT game.

I could go on and on.

I first started to remember the Packers in the late 80's, mainly the early Majik years in 1989. Alot of Favre memories, I don't know how I could pick one, so I try to give my top 5 (which will probably turn into 10)...

No specific order...

1. Favre to Sharpe in '93 playoffs. Big moment for team and huge play obviously.
2. Favre to Rison in the Super Bowl.
3. Favre runs it in the County Stadium finale...but also risked the entire playoff berth if I recall correctly. If he doesn't get in, the Pack wouldn't have been able to make the playoffs that year.
4. Favre to Jennings last year vs Broncos (and vs San Diego was pretty damn close). I remember watching the Bronco games with a couple buddies and we were jumping around screaming like friggin school girls we were so pumped.
5. The Favre-Sapp battles, or any of those intense battles for that matter. Loved the intensity. Also loved when he absolutely crushed his own teammates in the early 90's. I thought he ended Darrell Thompson's career after he tackled him after a TD in like 1993 or 94. Well maybe it did end his career :)6
6. Obviously the Raiders game is a no brainer great Favre moment.
7. I remember one in like 1995 vs Tampa Bay at Lambeau and Favre got crushed on the sideline. Probably should've been knocked out, but stayed in and threw the game winning touchdown to I want to say Jackie Harris.
8. Favre to Kitrick Taylor - it started it all.

Others...
The Freeman catch was pretty awesome, but more Free I'd say.
Favre to Bradford vs Vikings was a big one. That was about the last good memory of the Rhodes era.
That halloween game vs Chicago back in the day.

There are many more, but those are the ones that really stick out.

....and one of my favorite Favre quotes actually came from Trent Dilfer after another Favre 4th qtr comeback vs Tampa on a Sunday Night game. When asked what happened, Dilfer said "We got Favred."

Return to Green Bay Packers
