Also, If BJ Raji is there at 9 do you think that is a reach? What about Ziggy Hood in the 3rd round?

There will probably be better prospects than Raji at #9, so yes.

Ziggy Hood isn't a good fit for this defense. He's a Cover 2 type tackle who will penetrate. He might be ok as an end in a 3-4, but he'll grade out so much higher as a 4-3 tackle that there's no way he'll be available by the time he would make the most sense for us.

We'll agree to disagree about Leaf and Woodson. Most analysts saw Woodson as a much more sure thing, but QB is always at such a premium that they were willing to take the risk with Leaf.

I doubt it.

Really? Because it happens every year. Why will this year be any different?

I was saying that specifically about the DT position. This is such a poor class of DTs I don't see any after Raji and Jerry being looked at as potential starters next season. Maybe even none you could count on to rotate with another starter. I don't see teams taking someone like Brace or Taylor in round two when they can get an impact player instead.

I hope you're right, but I still think some team is going to get desperate and grab one of those guys in round 2.

Since NT is critical
and IF there were a NT worthy of a 2nd rd pick we'd take him -

does anybody know any team that has an extra solid rotational young NT that would be worth trading our 2nd or 3rd for? Not likely I know but some team might give up a promising backup to fill a hole elsewhere in their starting lineup.

I wouldn't give up a 2nd or a 3rd for a solid rotational guy. I understand the desire for a stud nose tackle, but there's no sense in overpaying for one right now. We have an entire defense to construct right now and we are likely going to find much better value pursuing other positions this year. Pickett and Cole might not be world beaters, but they'll suffice for a year while we get this thing revved up. Next year's draft is loaded with monstrous defensive tackles to choose from: Suh from Nebraska, Cody from Alabama, Boo Robinson from Wake Forest, Jarvis Jenkins from Clemson, Ekom Udofia from Stanford, Al Woods from LSU, Cordarrow Thompson from Virginia Tech, Kellen Heard from Texas A&M, and Torrell Troup from Central Florida...

Agreed on next year's class. It'll be a ridiculous group.

yea. we need to understand that this defense isn't going to become the steelers in one off-season. it could potentially take several seasons (i hope not) to get the right personnel we need, and we definitely won't do it in just this years draft or free agency class. we could add some potential studs in this draft, but odds are they may take time to develop as well.
