Ron Wolf - Hall of Fame Eligible

Peter King has an article today about the next Hall of Fame class (he is one of 44 voters). The first round of voting gets it down to 25, then they get it down to 15, and then they vote on who actually goes in. He goes through his choices for the initial 25. He had this to say about Wolf:

Ron Wolf over Bobby Beathard and George Young. Tough call. I saw Beathard pick so many backbone players for the great Washington teams, and I saw Young build the infrastructure for the Giants team that's still good today. Young has had his case heard in the room by Hall selectors and been turned down, so this year it came down to Beathard and Wolf. I almost picked both.

But I chose Wolf because he took over a Green Bay franchise that hadn't won a division title in 20 seasons, made a gutsy trade of a first-rounder for the unknown Brett Favre, somehow convinced Reggie White to come to Green Bay in free agency, hired Mike Holmgren, and chose the following players on day two of the draft: Mark Chmura, Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck, Dorsey Levens, Adam Timmerman, Donald Driver (who caught his franchise-record 602nd pass Sunday), Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, Mark Tauscher and Aaron Kampman. Tauscher, the 224th pick in 2000, and Driver, the 213th in 1999, both became cornerstone players for a decade.

Ah the good old days...
sure Wolf made plenty of errors but his overall body of work is reflected in Ws&Ls
and (while you can argue we should have had more) the only Superbowl since Lombardi.

So far TT's best 2nd day picks -
Crosby
Jolly?
Spitz?
bishop?
Jones?
Finley?
Sitton?
Lang?

Plenty of potential but so far only Crosby & Jolly are really on and Crosby's a K -a typical 2nd day pick and Jolly may not even resign. The rest are still rumors at this point.

Wolf had an odd track record with draft picks, pretty amazing how often his first round picks were mediocre or bad, yet he had so much success in the 5th, 6th, and 7th rounds. You could argue that overall, his 7th rounds picks were better than his 1st round picks.

Did Wolf even pick a good player in the first round? :lol:

He was a great GM, but for some reason he drafted in reverse. Save the best for last, I guess.
