Re: Panthers Ready to let Peppers walk: Go Get him TT
After reading the JS piece with stats on the D-line, I no longer consider the Kampman experiment a failed one. In fact, if the numbers are right, he actually did pretty well. There were some times he looked like a fish out of water in coverage, but in terms of playing the run and rushing the QB he was fine. I actually hope we bring him back.
That said, getting another pass rusher should be a top priority this offseason.

I want no part of Peppers. These Reggie White comparisons leave out a notable difference, character. Reggie had it, I don't think Peppers does.

I sort of agree, but the staff needs to use Kampman correctly. That is, if you're dropping him into coverage, don't make him try and run with a tight end or a back. At least let him settle back into a zone. Tampa's raw, rookie QB exposed us for that. Also, don't drop him into coverage the vast majority of the time. I liked it when they let him stick his hand in the dirt on obvious passing downs so as to not tip their hand regarding where the extra rushers were coming from. The best thing for Kampman is going to be the fact that Matthews has established himself as a feared rusher. That means teams won't be loading up Kampman's side with blockers.
I agree completely, though, that finding more rushers is a must and there are a ton to be had in this draft that would fit into what we do.

Comparing White to Peppers is like comparing Michael Jordan to Ray Allen... They are pretty much the same guy, right?

I don't think anyone has made the case that they are the same player, what I, at least, have been saying is that it will make an impact not greater to, but perhaps, similar to the impact that White had. We aren't talking about on-the-field numbers, we are saying that if you can add a key player like this for the right price (which it almost certainly won't be), you do it and it has an effect on your team not unlike the effect that it had when White signed. White and Peppers are different players and those two Packer teams that they'd be added to are very different.
Reggie is, sadly, dead. We cannot add him to the roster again. Peppers is one of the best DL/LB possibilities out there and all we are saying is at the time we got Reggie we got the best, and the Peppers signing would be similar in that vein. Geez.

I just don't think he has nearly the impact that Reggie White has in any aspect.
He won't make nearly as big of an impact on the field, in the media, in the locker room, he won't attract any other players... I honestly just don't see any comparison other than they play the same position.
Like I said, it's like comparing Ray Allen to Michael Jordan.

Re: Panthers Ready to let Peppers walk: Go Get him TT
Except for the fact that White wasn't added to one of the top Defenses in the league who need little save for a couple guys including someone to rush the passer from his position.
I see your point Luke, I agree with you, I never disagreed. Peppers isn't White and he never will be, but either will anyone else, the comparison was a way to try to share my thought on what the impact he might have would be like. Circumstances surrounding the situation are surely different...

I guess my point is that if he isn't going to have the same effect on the field, in the locker room, in the media and he won't be attracting other players... Then the impact isn't really similar at all.
Could he be the guy who puts us over the top? Sure he could be. I still wouldn't say that he deserves to be compared to Reggie White because of that though... Reggie White did a lot for this franchise, way more than Peppers could even hope to accomplish.
I see your argument, I just don't agree with it.

Yeah, and either way, we won't find out, which I guess I am fine with. I have faith in the master plan, but if I were the GM, I'd be tempted to role the dice (which is probably why I'd be a horrible GM).

I would be tempted as well...
Then I would hear that a 30 year old DE wants over $100 million and I would start to focus on other things.

Yep. If that's what he'll get on the open market, no way I'm paying him that.

Indeed. Reggie was a motivator and able to corral guys like crazy ass Wayne Simmons (RIP). He became an instant cornerstone, and along with Brent, the face of the Packers.
I guess if I had to compare, bringing in Peppers would be like NE adding Adalius Thomas. An impact player for 1-3 years, who will fade thereafter.

A reanimated Reggie White is still better than Peppers.

Would a front-loaded contract during the uncapped year alleviate such concerns?

Peppers is nice. . .but i would pass. I prefer that we target Dunta Robinson or Leigh Bodden
