LB Nick Barnett placed on IR; Packers sign DE Montgomery

By Lori Nickel of the Journal Sentinel

Oct. 15, 2010 11:22 a.m. |(14) Comments

On Wednesday as reporters entered the Green Bay locker room, Packers head athletic trainer Pepper Burruss said "Welcome to the training room!"

That's how bad it is. Every other Packer seems injured.

As expected, the Green Bay Packers have put linebacker Nick Barnett on injured reserve for the rest of the season and have also re-signed defensive end Mike Montgomery.

Montgomery is a familiar face. The 6-foot-5, 282-pound sixth-year player out of Texas A&M, was selected by the Packers in the sixth round of the 2005 draft. In 56 games (eight starts) during his five years in Green Bay (2005-09), he has five career sacks and 123 total tackles. He signed with the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent in March 2010, but was released in the final roster cutdown in September. He is here to help the ailing defensive line, as Ryan Pickett and Mike Neal have injuries.

Barnett sustained a wrist injury against Detroit in Week 4. This is the second time in three years Barnett has had season-ending surgery. Barnett had the surgery on Wednesday and it's likely it will take two months for him to come back, time that is too long apparently for general manager Ted Thompson.

Barnett's reaction on his twitter account: :-( f#%^*

His follow up: "Well it is what it is... Next year someone will pay for this.. I will take out my anger and frustrations out on all opposing teams!"

Barnett is always injured and hes very over rated. Hes nothing special at MLB, and I would take Bishop over Barnett if I had to choose one anyway.

Funny, I was just looking at Montgomery's facebook last night because I had randomly friended him 4 years ago or whatever. He was saying, "on to Dallas!" because he must still have some affiliation with them before this? I dunno. Now he's back.

First of all, how old are you?

Second of all, the guy was willing to risk his future by not having surgery on his wrist and coming back this season. Keep in mind that it's the same injury that Urlacher had against us in the season opener last year, when it was determined he'd miss the entire season the day after our game.

Overrated? Funny. I think Barnett's actually one of the more underrated MLB's in the game and the Bishop love is way over the top. I'm hoping he does well filling in for Barnett, but this is a big loss. I don't know how you can think otherwise.

Would you take Bishop's backup over Barnett?
