OT: Advanced Stats for NFL players

Post#1 » by LUKE23 » Wed Apr 13, 2011 3:00 pm

Completely off topic, but was wondering how many had insight on this. I'm attempting to throw something together with advanced stats, and was wondering if anyone had a good list of ones used to evaluate individual NFL players (or teams). I know the NBA ones very well, but definitely don't claim to be an expert in the other sports and don't even know if this is prominent yet in the NFL.

Football-Reference has some stuff. Not really sure how useful it is though.

Other than that I haven't seen anything around for advanced football stats.

Funny that you should bring this up. Basketball stats guru Dean Oliver is a friend of mine and left the Nuggets front office back in February to rebuild the stats database for ESPN. He said current football metrics need a lot of work, and the first thing they are having him do is advance their NFL stats. So that's something to keep an eye on, though I don't have a specific time-frame as to when you can see the results of his work.

Some teams do keep more advanced stats unofficially. The Bengals track missed tackles and successful blitz pickups, as an example. The Panthers used to chart how many times the QB intentionally missed a throw, both for and against them (don't know if they still do). But they're largely subjective based on the observer. Football Outsiders does a pretty good job, but I've seen them manipulate and massage stats to support some predetermined conclusions more than a few times. Aaron Schatz doesn't do it, but they have some staff writers that do.

KC Joyner at ESPN does some good work with advanced stats too.
