Chillar Could Be Out For The Season - UPDATE: Released

Post#1 » by MickeyDavis » Thu Jul 28, 2011 11:51 pm

Sorry if this is in the other thread but thought it was important.

A source familiar with the team said that linebacker Brandon Chillar suffered a serious hamstring injury that could put his season in jeopardy. Another source said he knew there was an injury issue, but he didn't know the extent of it.

Chillar has not yet reported to camp and the Packers are waiting to examine him to see the extent of the injury.
.
.
.
It remains to be seen how bad Chillar's injury is. His agent, Jim Ivler, declined to comment on whether Chillar had suffered an injury at all.

Chillar was coming off shoulder surgery that ended his season prematurely last season. He is a tremendously conditioned athlete who trains as hard as anyone in the locker room.

He signed a four-year, $19 millon contract extension in December of 2009 and has three years left on his contract. He is scheduled to make $2.2 million this year.

I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I smell injury settlement. Maybe they keep Pop now.

MLB is starting to look like a position of weakness. I am perfectly fine with the starting combination of Hawk and Bishop...

But after those guys we have pretty much nothing if Chillar is down for the count. Although, knowing TT, one of those guys will get hurt and some rookie/undrafted FA will come in and be better than them.

We certainly found out last year how important depth is. This week we've lost Barnett, Pop and now maybe Chillar. But I guess it's best it happened now and now a month from now.

We can also sign some other guys for much cheaper that were cut by other squads. A "Nick Barnett" of a different team but not on a Nick Barnett contract.

Regardless if depth is now thin, i refuse to accept that Poppinga is a loss at all. He's awful. Chillar i don't think much of either, but he at least is an experienced guy who knows the defense completely.

If this was a normal offseason where rookies had a full rookie camp, OTA's, and a mini-camp under their belts before training camp, i'd be less concerned about having mainly just young guys as the backup linebackers.

Popp sucks and should be an early cut besides he is a OLB & never played ILB.
IF Chill is out I expect TT to get a deal on some vet ILB to go w/ Smith in reserve.
I could also see Jones moved inside since Zombo & Walden are better IMO.

Usually there are bargains out there this time of year as expensive guys, like Barnett, are cut. The one difference is now teams have to spend almost all of their cap while in the past many teams were well below the cap. So there are teams that have to spend just to spend.

Obviously, whenever Chillar would've come in, Shields will come in now, and we'll go Neal/Pickett/Raji/Matthews/Hawk/Bishop/Tramon/Shields/Collins/Woodson/Burnett and be literally the best defense ever.

Isnt it awesome to be worrying about subpackages in coverage and rush rather than every down players. In TT I trust.

I'm more worried with what happens if Hawk or Bishop get hurt. I really didn't even think about not having Chillar for sub packages when I read the thread title.

Chillar was mainly just subbed in for one of the ILBs (Hawk) in coverage packages because the coaches thought he was better in coverage. We won't be subbing in Shields for an ILB.

I have high hopes for Smith who by all accounts is a very good football player. We'd still need another guy. I'm definitely cool with throwing Smith, Wilhelm, Jones and whoever else we can find into an open competition, and let the best two men emerge.

If Jones can convert I'd be fine with him and Smith as back ups as well. I'd actually like to see Jones move inside, I like him as a player but I'm not sure if he's enough of a rusher to get regular playing time opposite Clay outside.

Damn. More pulling rabbits out of hats if we have an injury.

Did the coaches say they were moving D.J. Smith to ILB or is that conjecture on the part of fans?

Since he's been released I will lock this one up and we can talk about the LB position in the other threads.
