No question that position coaches generally don't get the credit they deserve at the time at developing talent. Look at how many head coaches came out of the staff Holmgren put together in Green Bay.

As for McCarthy's staff and the guys you mentioned, don't forget Jimmy Robinson who successfully coached our receivers for years before leaving for Dallas in the offseason. I read McGinn say multiple times that Robinson was viewed as one of the better receiving coaches in the game.

On the current staff, i've heard Perry interviewed a few times and was very impressed. If he isn't poached to run a defense by another team in the next year or two which i expect, and Capers were to either retire or leave for a different job, my money is on Perry being McCarthy's first choice to replace Capers. I could see Trgovac also. Kevin Green looks to have made a fabulous transition from elite player to quality position coach, something that often does work out as well as some would expect. Trgovac was a very respected DL coach even before running his own defense in Carolina. It would be hard to argue with the results at CB under Whitt.

Obviously Ted has a draft and develop philosophy for team building, but like you mention, that philosophy can only work if the head coach also truly believes in that philosophy and has the coaches to develop the players. A poor coaching staff can sometimes make a GM look worse and a great staff can make a GM look better.

Take Rodgers for a major example. He probably would have become at least a solid QB wherever he went, but he definitely could have ended up not being special under a much less skilled quarterback developer than McCarthy. Not only did MM pretty dramatically change how Aaron holds the ball and throwing motion, it resulted in Rodgers going from having a good arm to an elite arm. If i was a young quarterback with plenty of physical skills, but raw in say the mold of Jake Locker type, i would want McCarthy above anyone else to teach me how to become better in all aspect of being an NFL quarterback.

That is very true about Robinson. He undoubtedly played a huge role in the development of our WRs in the time he was here.

Out of our current coaches and their potential in the future, you missed our current (and only) assistant HC in Winston Moss. If you watch interviews with this guy you realize he has a sharp mind and that he commands respect. He's even more intense than Greene, but it is a sharper intensity.

I would think it is very likely he gets a shot as a HC or a DC in the near future. I think he might be more the type to delegate as a HC, but he could really set a tone from the top with his personality. I think he could be a Lovie Smith type HC in that regard.

f you haven't watched interviews with Moss on Packers.com, check them out.

Edit: After thinking about it, Moss could be like Singletary minus the borderline personality disorder.

More than the playing time, we offered Shields a larger signing bonus. I believe we gave him $25k which was about the most you could get as a UDFA in previous years and the Bears only offered him $15k or something. Considering his production that seems absolutely insane. Obviously he got a contract beyond that but from what I heard it came down to the Packers offering a bigger signing bonus at the time.

Maybe the craziest thing about Shields is that it seemed at the time that we didn't even bring him in primarily to play cornerback. We knew he was a gunner on kick coverage and thought he might be able to inject some energy into the return game. Joe Whitt gets his hands on him and suddenly we've got one of the best young corners in the league on a UDFA contract. Just ridiculous.

Getting both Tramon and Shields as UDFA is about as asinine as it gets. Additionally, most have said that Davon House has been the most impressive rookie outside of Cobb so far as well. Would be nice to have him establish himself as a starting caliber corner. We'd have all our corners locked up through 2014 or later but Shields, who is 2012.
