The only way i can see it possible at all of House playing a lot even if Woodson, Tramon, and Shields are still healthy is Woodson being shifted to safety and i just don't see that happening unless maybe Collins replacement/replacement were dreadful over a multi-game stretch.

To put Woodson, Tramon, Shields, House, and Burnett on the field a lot, one of those first four would have to play safety with Burnett and Woodson is the only one Capers could consider. Playing Charles though at safety instead of corner, that not only removes his really good slot coverage skills, it would mostly take him away from playing on the slot area of the line of scrimmage where he's excelled blitzing and doing various other things. At safety, he'd be spending most of his snaps 5-15 yards off the line of scrimmage, not something i see Capers wanting.

Definitely see what you're saying here. I guess what I'm expecting is that Capers' creativity could bridge the gap between the apparent reality that only one of those guys is technically a safety and my idea. I don't know what it would look like, but Capers doesn't tie himself to convention. Ultimately, though, he does have to match up with what the offense shows him. I guess I just see a lot of guys who can both cover and tackle (granted, a couple who can only do one or the other), and figure that Capers can put them in the right spots.

One possible scenario could be Burnett back in a cover one with Woodson, Shields, Williams and House all in coverage. Obviously all of this is moot unless/until House forces himself into consideration, which is never going to happen if he can't stay healthy, so that's step one.

I can totally see that. A lot of times one of the safeties is covering a TE or RB anyways. Woodson could really roam then, with three other corners that can cover or zone up. He could not only blitz or take a man in coverage but he could even sneak into a shallow zone like a SS would.

What has Ted ever cared about in a "known commodity?"

Didn't trusting that James Starks would emerge late in the season and not making moves for anybody else prove it to you?

Unless Sharper is leaps and bounds better than what we have in our depth chart, he's not going to waste his time. He trusts his system.

I think it would be easier for a rookie running back to be successful than a rookie DB. Just a simpler job overall. Plus Starks had the majority of the season to learn the system. Of course I don't know where House or Jennings are in terms of development and I don't know how the team views their readiness. All that I'm saying is that if Sharper can still move, then it would probably be easier for him to come in contribute immediately, and in a positive fashion - because he has so much NFL experience.

Well remember that this is for backup safety still for the time being.

He also opened the year with a rookie at S last year.

@CasserlyCBS Nick Collins had surgery last night. The surgery a success/optimistic he will play next yr.

Good deal! I really wouldn't have been surprised had this been a career ender.

Really good news!

Did we ever really find out more details about his injury? All I've heard is "neck injury".

He had a single fusion on his neck vertebrae,

"A 2010 study found that 40 players had come back from similar surgery to play again. Steve Slaton is a recent example."

JS Blog is a little bit more of a downer: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/130873233.html

Obviously, I'm relieved that he will be able to live his life without restrictions but it's so damn unfair that this happened to him. He's 28 years old and should be out there playing his best football in the prime of his career instead of going through this.

That I don't know, just a snippet I saw floating around the internet. It can't be too many because neck injuries aren't all that common, its not like a broken leg, torn acl, etc...
