Re: Woodson out 6 weeks
This kind of thing has become so commonplace with this team that I'm basically numb to any injury news as long as it doesn't involve Rodgers.

if Rodgers got injured and we still had this guy below, I wouldn't feel too worried

but we don't so any injury to him and its game over with Graham Harrell (BJ Coleman shoulda got the backup job damnit)

Re: Woodson out 6 weeks
**** news, but at least we have a lot of young talent itching to play. And as someone else mentioned, the next 3 weeks we won't need him.

I agree with your nickel package
Altho according to article - Jennings played nickel S almost as much as McMillian. Still competition there.
Dime? Bush in slot until Shields is back - altho Shields has not been effective in slot - he's so far strictly an outside CB. Maybe House is dime slot?
dime?
S = Burnett-McMillian
CB = Williams Shields
slot = Hayward & House

It is what it is. He's 36 and physically not at all where he was two-three years ago. You could see his body absorb those blows from Jackson yesterday. He knows where he needs to be on the field but doesn't have the body to take those guys on anymore )and not that he ever did as he usually would go for the ball strip)
Just excited to see Hayward out there more and if the other young guys can step up. We'll need it.
That isn't fair at all. Wood has been one of the best tackling CBs in the league and still is a very good tackler. There have been times when he's been crushed while making a tackle, but that is only because he is so willing to try to tackle guys properly who are much bigger than he is. There are few CBs who form tackle like Wood. Beyond that, he's always been excellent at knowing when to go for a strip.

Re: Woodson out 6 weeks
Woodson is a borderline liability in coverage at this point, but his snaps at S and LB in run support is something that no one on our roster can replicate. He is still DAMN important to our defense, we're lucky the schedule looks like it does the next 3 weeks.
I hope it's mostly McMillian/Hayward trying to fill Wood's role, but I have a feeling we may see more Bush than McMillian.

Re: Woodson out 6 weeks
It's not the same collarbone.
Losing Woodson is huge, but I think our defense can survive. Getting House back is nice. We'll see what McMillan can do. I like the depth in our secondary.
ETA: It may actually be the same collarbone. At least Seifert is saying so. I got my original info from listening to Homer on the way home.

Re: Woodson out 6 weeks
Losing Woodson obviously hurts as you can't really replace what he brings to the defense: intangibles. He has a keen ability to strip the football and his blitz ability is great too.
But let's be honest, for this defense to improve through the course of the season, the young guys HAVE to get reps. Heyward, House, McMillian, Shields. The improvement of the young guys can really improve this defense going forward and we will need them.

Re: Woodson out 6 weeks
Well I will say that Woodson has lost it in coverage. I think that it's pretty clear Tramon, Shields and Hayward are better in coverage at this point. House, as he gets back into the flow of things, may also be better than him in that area. I like our young safeties a lot as well... so I don't think this is a huge loss.
That being said the primary thing I worry about is losing his leadership out on the field. Overall though I don't really think Woodson has been all that great this year. Assuming health to our other corners (which probably isn't smart to do, considering everyone on our damn team seems to get hurt constantly
) I don't think this is going to be a huge loss.

I hope Burnett can handle lining up the secondary and calling out coverages by himself.

First thing I thought of, as well.

This. I actually don't think Woodson is having that great of a year when considering his fading coverage ability and the penalties he incurs, but he still brings experience, leadership, and run support to the team that no one we have to replace him can replicate. So it hurts, but it could be worse.

Re: Woodson out 6 weeks
I think we'll miss him a lot in really important games against the Giants and Vikings, but probably won't notice as much in the other games. Definitely a big loss. All we can do is hope the other guys step up and that it isn't somebody who's incapable of stepping up (Bush).

I doubt it. Bush hasn't played defense for weeks. Even with Shields out, I don't think Bush will get many snaps unless he gets a handful in a dime set.
Woody is a big loss because he's basically been a safety/linebacker in terms of his role. He's incredible in his ability in run support at only 205 or so. If you rewatch games and focus on him on running plays, he's constantly having to attack and take on OL and TEs like a LB. No other DB can come close to replicating that for us. There really aren't any other players in the league that can replicate his role, even at Wood's advanced age. Don't let a few blatant penalties or blow coverages fool you on how valuable he is on a down to down basis.
It may not be clear against **** teams in the next few weeks, but we will need to make big adjustments in terms of our D without Woodson. The main thing people should look for is how we do when we play our 2-4-5 set. Can we play that set against teams in their base set and their passing personnel groups? Will we need to play a "big" 2-4-5 with McMillian in the slot and Jennings at safety on early downs along with a passing nickel set with Hayward in the slot and McMillian moved back to safety alongside Burnett? Beyond the question of whether McMillian is good enough in coverage to play that slot role when he may need to cover WRs like a CB, can he hold up against the run the same way Wood did? In that role, you have to be able to attack blockers and take them on when a play comes your way. That's tough for any DB, let alone a rook.
On passing downs we are fine with Hayward in the slot with Tramon and Shields/House outside. Unfortunately, the majority of the snaps in a game are not clear passing snaps so we may need to drastically adjust the types of plays we call if McMillian can't handle the nickel role in our 2-4-5 run type D where that player is like a safety/LB/CB.

According to Rotoworld:
Doesn't sound like Woodson has been a "borderline liability" in coverage at all, overall. And despite PP25's "eye test" analysis, he has still been very good at coming up to the line and playing the run.
Woodson has graded out positively as a pass defender and particularly as a run defender according to Pro Football Focus.

Does this include all of the PI that he doesn't get called for?

Re: Woodson out 6 weeks
Meh, his performance has rendered me to the point of not really caring. He could not cover a trash can right now.
My only concern is this does not affect the rest of the defense the way it did to the Ravens this past week. But then again, C-Wood does not strike me as the type of leader that Ray Lewis is within a locker room. He will take a role here and there, but won't seek it out the way Ray does.
I still think we are in good shape heading into a soft part of the schedule.

Hasn't he been doing that stuff his entire career here? It just appears more pronounced these days because his speed isn't what it used to be.
