By the way, this guy right here was trying to calm everyone down after the 2-3 start. Over 16 games things will even out. Kinda LOLed at the pundits writing off the Pack and Pats after 5 or 6 games.

Don't dislocate your shoulder patting yourself on the back.

Brad Jones is a pretty mediocre ILB. He's vastly improved from where he was when he first started playing the spot earlier this year but he's got a long way to go before he's anywhere near the run defender or blitzer that Bishop is. Admittedly Jones has a big lean in pass coverage but for all of his athleticism he doesn't get to the spot as fast as Bishop did. Another offseason maybe and we might be in business, cause he's definitely improving in that regard. For now though Bishop is on a different tier as an ILB (assuming Bishop is healthy).

I've been on the Cut Hawk bandwagon as long as anybody, but this isn't the offseason to do it. He's been a rock in the middle for us. Dependability is a lot of times greater than ability and that's the case with Hawk. He's been doing a great job winning the chessmatch and has been on the field for every game. Between the whistles he's been better than he's ever been since we switched defenses. I've got no beef with Hawk or Hawk's cap number this season, guy has battled and made that deal seem not so awful.

Again we run into the whole Hawk and Bishop don't play the same position problem. If you think Jones struggles in the run game at Bishop's spot, I shudder at the thought of him at Hawk's spot. Jones has no anchor at all and in many instances is downright scared of contact. Hawk's job on a lot of plays is just to stalemate a blocker in a strategic place, whether that's to plug a hole or force a runner inside. Jones would be awful in that role. Bishop wouldn't be much better, for different reasons.

I agree with you on retaining Jones. Being able to pull Hawk off the field in certain passing situations would be helpful. Jones is the best cover backer on the team and he's definitely got a role on this team and deserves a ton of props for stepping up and filling in when the team needed him, he's just not better than Bishop, not better than Hawk at Hawk's primary job, and I pray to God he's not better than Nick Perry. Guy's great depth, and a damn useful guy to have, just not somebody anyone should feel comfortable with going to war with as the starter.

Having watched every game this season, I don't see what you're seeing. Hawk has been as mediocre as ever. Jones will be a perfect compliment to Bish-please next year and that's awesome. With Smith coming back we can move ILB down as far as offseason needs.

Neither Jones nor Bishop are consistent at taking on blockers. Both are guys that fly to the ball with abandon. Those are guys that are going to make big plays and get headlines but you do need a Backer that's going to stick his nose in there and hold his ground at the point of attack. Both Jones and Bishop prefer to avoid a block rather then take it on and two such players playing together usually is a recipe for hit or miss plays. Sometimes they'll get a stuff other times they'll get gashed. Asking either guy to do what Hawk does would greatly reduce their effectiveness. I don't see ILB as a huge need. Getting a guy with a skillset similar to Hawk would be great but we're not desperate.

Hawk rarely makes a face to face tackle that stops the runner in his tracks. Its typically him hanging from the runners hip or shoulder being dragged 3-5 yards.

Yeah, I was going to say if that's the panic that's pretty weak.

If this guy doesn't end up working out for us, I say we go after the Gophers newest 2013 commit. Under Armour All-American kicker Ryan Santoso. Standing 6'5 270, he's the next Seabass.

What the hell kind of class do they have? (looking this morning)

It's like a Tim Brewster class without the stars. One Minnesota kid?

The in-state class is REALLY poor. And a few of the top kids went else where. It's definitely not a very good class, but that's to be expected until Kill starts over achieving. I'd say this class is weaker than last year's, but solely because last year's in-state class was loaded (by MN's standards).

It's pretty rare for a kicker to get a full ride. As far as I've seen he's about a top 7 kicker in this class. Not that that really means anything, I just think his size is pretty jaw dropping, especially for a high schooler.

Looks half finished. And blind. But that could be perfect for a directionless franchise.
