All I am saying is I HOPE we at least made a similar or better offer to Byrd. If we did and he turned it down or decided to wait then I understand that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

This deal screams play for 2 years, then restructure. I'd imagine that is what happens.

Here's the official contract breakdown from Silverstein:

Green Bay - Packers cornerback Sam Shields' four-year deal came in exactly as Shields' camp said it would - four years, $39 million, including a $12.5 million signing bonus.

A source with access to NFL Players Association salary information said the four-year deal featured a $2.5 million roster bonus in 2015 and $500,000 roster bonuses each year, which are divided into 16 parts and awarded with each game Shields is on the active roster.

The signing bonus is the only guaranteed portion of the contract.

Shields' salary cap numbers are as follows: $5.562,500 in '14, $9.125 million in '15, and $12.125 million in '16 and '17.

Shields' base salaries are $1.5 million in '14, $2.5 million in '15, $8 million in '16 and $8 million in '17.

He also has $500,000 workout bonuses in each of the four years of the deal.

Shields' per year average is $9.75 million, which puts him third on the team behind quarterback Aaron Rodgers ($22 million) and linebacker Clay Matthews ($13.2 million).

I like that nothing besides the signing bonus is guaranteed. If things go sideways for whatever reason we can cut ties. He's going to really have to take the next step as a player to earn those final two years of the contract at those numbers.

It is thought that the cap will make a huge jump in two years also.

Yeah, the TV contracts are about to kick in, I believe this is the last year for the DirectTV Sunday NFL Ticket package contract too so that is due for a renegotiation and they were talking of even letting it be open to multiple providers, I would imagine the cap is going to keep increasing.

Yeah Google was rumored to be interested in buying the rights and they could pretty much out bid anyone.

What would Google do with the NFL rights? Just stream it online? :o

Well they offer Google Fiber in Kansas City (of all places) and are looking to expand it. So I imagine you'd be able to get it via that cable service, but yeah I'd guess they'd also let you stream it, maybe with a Chromecast or something.

They were tossing out the idea of using Youtube for games, for free possibly. Their ad-revenue would skyrocket even if they offered it for free.

I knew about Google Fiber... It just doesn't seem like it's viable to be that big time the time the contract comes up. Streaming games on YouTube and things like that would be awesome. Tons of opportunities for ad revenue and stuff like that.

What about people that aren't computer savvy and prefer television/other cable providers though?

Something tells me that unless Google has an idea to broadcast the games to as wide of an audience as selling the rights to the major cable networks that the NFL will continue on with the status quo.

Id rather have shields. But I guess it's debatable.
