Huh? Our defense has forced 4+ turnovers each of the last two games. At what point are some of you going to stop blaming Ted and start attributing the defensive woes to one Ernest Dominic Capers, who's typical prevent defense couldn't secure a 17 point lead in the 4th quarter against a **** 3-win Bears team?

Well, Ted did let Casey Hayward go, while we're having major CB problems. In addition to putting together defenses that have unreliable pass rushers and have often got run up the gut on because they were weak at MLB. So I think there's plenty of blame to go around for the defensive woes. Don't get me wrong, Capers has a lot of issues and should be fired, but it seems you're using his struggles to deflect from Ted's mistakes too. I mean the reason why Capers got hired in the first place was the defense wasn't getting it done after Ted had a chance to put his imprint on the team. I think it's about time both depart. Maybe Ted could save his job in my eyes getting back to the Super Bowl this year at least, and McCarthy for that matter, but yeah I do see no point in continuing the Capers experiment.

The two picks by HaHa yesterday were simply bad throws by Barkley. It's not as if they were created by anything special that the players did. The sack/strip by Peppers was actually a forced turnover by a player creating it himself.
As for Capers supposedly playing mainly just a prevent defense during that comeback, all i'll say is what game were you watching? He sent a number of blitzes during the comeback, but our pass rushers suck so the Bears kept picking up the blitzes. At some point it's on the players to you know, beat the blockers in front of them. For guys in the secondary to not keep getting burned like Randall and Rollins who were high picks.
Capers would have been better served actually playing a prevent defense and rushing only three guys given when four or more rushers were sent, it didn't create any pressure.
With Shields out, the trio of Gunter, Randall, and Rollins is a below average group of corners at best. Outside of the occasional pressure created by Peppers, none of our OLB's can win one on one battles to sack or disrupt the QB. There are no young pass rushers waiting to be developed. Daniels is the only guy on the DL with pass rushing talent and he's been largely invisible in that regard.
So tell me where exactly is all of this talent on defense that Ted has accumulated? Sure Capers deserves some blame, but Ted deserves just as much. This is a below average talent unit, especially with a gimpy Clay and Shields career likely over.

I just don't understand how people can do nothing but blame the scheme when it comes to McCarthy and the offense and how stale it's become, but when it comes to the defense, it's a major talent issue? Nah, look at the weaknesses of this team over the last 4 years and the most glaring constant is the pass defense hemorrhaging yards in the middle by design, and giving up big leads in the 4th quarter while the offense dinks and dunks its way to the game-winning score (usually using up most of the clock in the process).
Injuries have hurt this year but that's just another reason why the main issue isn't the actual drafted talent. They were playing great early in the year with a boat load of injuries as well. Consistency has always been the problem. Getting rid of Dom doesn't solve all the problems, but you damn sure get rid of the biggest one.

Yea, look at all of the picks in the first 3-4 rounds that Ted has spent on the defense the last 4-5 years and how many of those players range from being good to consistent playmakers?
Worthy a total 2nd round bust. Datone Jones pretty much a bust given he was taken in the 1st round. Perry has had his moments, but to many injuries and inconsistent play when healthy. He was taken in the 1st round.
Randall gets toasted way more often than he makes plays for a 1st round pick. I liked the Rollins pick at the time, but he's mostly been terrible for a 2nd round pick.
Clark a solid run stuffer, but has shown zero pass rush ability. Fackrell a 3rd round pick this year and he's either hurt or always inactive because i can't remember the last time i saw him take a snap on defense.
Thorton a 3rd round total bust. Bradford a 4th round bust. McMillian 4th round bust.
Those are all from Ted's last five drafts and none of his 5th-7th round guys on defense hit much either from those drafts.
Dix was a pretty good pick. So was Ryan. Daniels a very good pick. Hayward good. Jury still out on Martinez and Lowry.
Bottom line though, way more blown or very mediocre picks than good ones on defense and that's a big reason why the defense struggles. Not just Capers.

Totally. I said something similar earlier in this thread or the other. MM better be working on some play-action type stuff off Ty's success with straight-up handoffs. There's all kinds of wrinkles and package plays that could be based off it.

There's SO much we could do with Ty now that he's a serious threat as a RB. I think he's even more dangerous than a RB who can catch passes because obviously he's a better WR than most RBs. Early last season we saw some looks with Ty AND Cobb in the backfield. We could do some stuff with Janis and him- reverse, fake reverse, jet-sweep type stuff. He should catch some screen passes. We should be able to get some package plays that put Ds in no-win situations using Ty (esp if Cook is healthy too).
But with MM, you know nothing's getting on the field until it's f*cking perfect in practice though, so let's maybe not hold our breath.

Yeah, imagine if MM could get half as creative as the Pats when it came to using the RB on offense.

I feel like there's a little revisionist history with Hayward. In his 4 years in GB he was pretty good as a rookie, hurt and ineffective for the next two seasons, and just OK last year. They dude was allergic to tackling and isn't fast enough to play man with the really good WR's. Some people act like he was a pro-bowler here but that's just not the case. I think the evidence of this was clear when teams weren't lining up to sign the dude last spring and he got a modest deal from SD. Now he's played better in SD and Rollins and Randle have played much worse than expected so sure if you're playing the hindsight game they should have kept him.
The fact that he has played better in SD can definitely be used as a knock on Capers. The whole Capers vs. TT debate is interesting and I'd say it's probably a little of both their faults. For Capers D to work you need corners who can play man and pass rushers who can get home and right now TT hasn't got enough guys who can do those things. But a negative for Capers is whatever the hell scheme he was playing against the bears where the corners were constantly giving a 10 yard cushion like the were playing a team of Randy Moss's or something.. that was truly baffling.

There can be no revisionist history because Ted made a projection and was wrong. That's his job as a GM. He failed at it, period, whether it be in regards to Randall, Rollins, Hayward; or all three.
Hayward never got much of a shot at a feature CB. That's part on Capers, and part on Ted not being a leader to not influence him to get more of an opportunity.
Ted has also put together poor pass rushing units and MLB's in his time with GB. Then like you said there was also the early prevent for Capers against Chicago, and zone defense where wr's were just running by db's while they just stood there by design, even on 3rd down and medium to long. BTW, Ted is responsible for Capers' existence so long here, so either way he's to blame. Reality is they both are majorly to blame for the bad defenses during their marriage together.
Ted and Mike have the fallback of the strength of the offenses. But at what point is it worth keeping them around for when we have Rodgers locked in for a while and maybe Hundley for a while. Don't know if we need Ted anymore then. We won the Super Bowl in part because it was a blend of Ted's strengths and Sherman's (what few he did actually have). Now it's all Ted. McCarthy does a lot of things that irritate me, like game management and short yardage decisions. But I can't deny that he runs an offense overall pretty well, so he has more value than the other two, although I could still take or leave him and if we don't get to the Super Bowl this year I'd be fine with a house cleaning.

Hayward was given plenty of opportunities after his rookie year. Unfortunately that hamstring injury ruined a season and he was also beat out by Micah freaking Hyde at one point a couple years ago for a nickel spot. If they felt they could count on him they probably wouldn't have picked two corners at the top of the 2015 draft. Heck he was the starter at the beginning of the season last year and Randle took his job and looked like a better outside corner. I'm just saying resigning him was far from a no brainer and that doesn't even factor in the fact that he was an unrestricted free agent and with all the young corners he might not have even entertained an offer to come back. I just feel it's easy to be captain hindsight with the Hayward situation.
I'm not trying to absolve TT from blame because as GM he is ultimately responsible. But so are coaches and players themselves are also responsible for taking coaching and getting better.

With all the DT and converted DE/OLB on the roster, they would probably be just as effective running a 4-3.
