Gotta keep the line drawn somewhere. Every year a fan base or two will want teams added.

If you have at least 6 with an auto bid for P5 Champs, your go-to response to whining fans can simply be “go win your conference”. If there’s automatic bids, the conference schedule is essentially pool play or the group stage of the playoff.

But then you might get a year where we suck and Iowa goes 8-4 with a 7-2 B10 record against a weak West, and win an ugly 24-21 game over 12-0 Ohio State and have Iowa in the playoffs, playing for a national championship after essentially having a nothing regular season. Happens in pro sports a lot, I guess, but still.

I would rather an 8-4 Iowa team sneak in than a team like TCU in 2014 getting left out. I still think TCU deserved a shot to win the championship that year and I think they had a decent shot too.

We won the SB as a 6 seed, and lost our first playoff game as the 15-1 reigning champs. Any one-and-done playoff system is going to have it’s quirks and allow a “hot” team to go on a run.

My point was other teams have given the Badgers an opening. Before today I would have said a one loss Badgers team didn't have a chance. But the margins (four teams) is so thin that a close loss would give the committee something to seriously consider.
