Murphy wanted to hire a true general manager, but McCarthy, according to a source, told his coaches that he would quit if Murphy hired Ball in that capacity, so Murphy changed his mind and created the new structure.
Murphy could have called McCarthy’s bluff and reminded him he had a contract and wasn’t going anywhere, so he’d have to accept that the new general manager had complete hiring and firing authority. Instead, he created an ill-conceived structure in which everyone reported to him instead of the general manager.
That move showed he may not have the guts to fire McCarthy, if that’s what is necessary.

I know I’m a little later here but help me. A “true” GM was Ball and not Guty? Or he’s saying a true GM in the sense of hiring or firing? In one way we dodged a bullet by him hiring Guty but that’s so f upped that he was going to hire Ball as the guy. His last three drafts aren’t good, and yes I believe he had a heavy hand in them.

Yeah that's kind of weird. Did Ball say he'd take the job only if MM reported to him? The whole structure seems weird but 17 other teams do it the same way. Both the GM and coach report to the owner (in our case Prez)
