If we were Cleveland, the Jets, or Jacksonville, then I'd be all for rolling the dice on Riley. Let him mold and develop a young QB and build through the draft. He's just not my first or second choice. Too risky for me given the title window that we have during Rodgers' career.

Yeah, Riley would have a learning curve for the pro game that might take too long given Rodgers’ age.

I'm not sure what you mean by "learning curve." It's the same game with generally the same rules.

Then why is Jim Harbaugh the only person who jumped from college directly to NFL HC (and even he was a former player and a QB coach briefly before his Stanford gig) to have any recent success?

It's a pretty small sample size you're picking from, there. I mean, off the top of my head, the only other recent example I can think of is Chip Kelly, who went 10-6 in his first two seasons before getting control of personnel and subsequently bombing. If you look historically, you've got several successes you can point to. There are failures there, too, but we've seen plenty of HC hires with NFL experience who have bombed spectacularly.

I think a large part of the reason that you don't see more coaches making the jump to the pros is because they get paid very well in college and basically run their programs like fiefdoms.

There will be a risk no matter who we hire. A coordinator who's never been a HC? Peyton was. McVay. Doug Peterson ("lucky" SB winner?). McAdoo? Some work out. Some don't. It certainly helps having Rodgers, Jones, Adams and some other promising young receivers. Just no retread coaches like Del Rio or Schwartz.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I don't know where this should be posted, or if it was posted already. I can't find it, but I'm not usually the one to find things first :P

https://deadspin.com/sounds-like-aaron-rodgers-and-mike-mccarthy-are-pretty-1830772755

McCarthy, like Rodgers, is an alpha male. When people familiar with the two were asked to describe their relationship, most say it is defined by tension. Until this year, it was a healthy tension that lifted both quarterback and coach. In 2018, something has been different.

McCarthy is the play caller, but because Rodgers is so intelligent and such a good improvisational player, the quarterback has the green light to change plays on the field as he see fit. He does, so often that it can be hard for McCarthy to get into a rhythm as the play caller. McCarthy might call the same play three times in a game, without the play actually being run as he called it. And if McCarthy calls a play that Rodgers doesn’t like early in the game, that can sour the mood for the rest of the game. Several sources familiar with the inner workings of the organization say that it devolved into a competition over who can call the better play, and both want the credit when things go right.

...

The questions about the coach-quarterback relationship have heated up with every Packers loss this season. Even after a win over Buffalo, Rodgers criticized the offense and blamed the game plan. “It was as bad as we’ve played on offense with that many yards in a long time,” he said. “There was no flow to the game… We were championship defensive level and non-playoff team offensive level today. That was not great, by any stretch of the imagination.” (Rodgers later clarified that he put most of the blame on himself rather than the coaching staff.)

That mini-controversy was nothing compared to what CBS cameras captured during a victory over the Bengals last season. After taking a sack late in the third quarter, Rodgers looked to the sideline. It didn’t take an expert lip-reader to decipher his message. “Stupid f***ing call!” And then again for good measure. “Stupid f***ing call!” The following week, when Rodgers walked into his individual meeting with McCarthy, the head coach had the broadcast clip pulled up on the screen, ready to review and discuss. Early in Rodgers’s career, McCarthy spent a lot of time coaching him to better control his body language when he was frustrated. That day, they had something of a refresher course.

...

“Aaron won’t be upset this story is being written and some of these frustrations are getting out there,” says a source close to Rodgers.

This is really interesting. How hard do you think it would be for a QB to constantly change plays? Honestly it's hard to tell who is right. But as a QB, that cant be easy to do on the fly. And MM overall is just not a good coach. So it's hard to side with him.

I like DeFilippo, but my first choice would be Arians. He has come out and said he has no interest in coaching any team other than the Browns. My choices would probably go:

Arians if he would hear it out > DeFilippo > Bieniemy > Riley > LaFleur > Harbaugh > McDaniels from these choices.

Not convinced on the career college coaches and it is somewhat of an assumption these guys would leave these big programs. Are their contracts expiring or what?

Josh McDaniels would jump at the job I think, he backed out of Indy knowing it was a bad situation altho what did New England promise him? Arians I'm a little skeptical of but Arizona is a bad organization too. Minnesota's QB coach has had some decent success last couple years I guess. I'm absolute sure that Philbin is going to get an interview for the job, probably win his way to the job. Pettine has some HC experience too so maybe he'll be a guy.

Realistically, not fantasy, what are the names to expect?

All of the names are in play. We are, currently, the standard for open coaching jobs. I expect that we will interview a ton of top end talent for the job.

DeFilippo - OC Vikings
Bieniemy - OC Chiefs
LaFleur - OC Titans
McDaniels - OC Patriots
Lincoln Riley - HC Oklahoma Sooners
Kliff Kingsbury - Ex-HC of Texas Tech, has an offer to become USC's OC
John Harbaugh - HC of the Ravens

The point of the list I made is more that the options in the poll are not pipe dreams. They are people with real aspirations and the body of work to deserve an interview for a team that expects greatness.

I fully expect us to interview at least 5 people on that list. This coaching choice and offseason will set the tone for the next decade of Packer football.

2 threads discussing the next coach, since this one was started pre firing and the other one after firing I started a new poll in the other thread and we'll lock this one up
