Just play Mertz the rest of the year. We need to win out AND get help just to make it to the title game, where we would get the crap beat out of us again. Pointless.

Get Mertz some experience so that at least something good comes out of this season.

Not sure why we never have Taylor on the field for these big plays, especially if our rb is going to consistently block noone

This has been the most incredibly vanilla and conservative playcalling I've seen in a while. The only wrinkle was a couple plays of wildcat they never went back to. Everything else has been predictable to the point they havent even been able to generate any mismatches with osu playing 9 guys in the box.

Save Mertz for next week. No need for him to get annihilated now.

Coan has been as bad as you can be today. That TD should’ve been an easy pick too.

Either:

A) Taylor was not the intended target, and the ball was underthrown.

B) Taylor was the target, and Coan made a risky throw in between two DBs.

I don't fancy Coan as a risk-taker, so I'm going with A.

This is a joke

They should be spreading the defense out and making them cover the whole field. How do we have NO quick slants or in or crossing patterns on a quick boot in order to make the defense respect those perimeter playmakers? They aren’t even getting a chance!

Theoretically they should be able to use the pass to set up the run just as much as vice versa but they insist on forcing the run instead of adapting to what’s in front of them. I’m not even joking that I think they’d still run if all 11 defenders were crammed in the box.

I can't stand the way Chryst calls games. Didn't even bother watching this game, because I could have told you the gameplan.

The mediocre O-line is the biggest issue, followed by conservative play-calling... and the two are very much related. I really don't get the annoyance with Coan. He's done a lot to compensate for the sluggish o-line but he's not Russell Wilson and very few QBs could play much better against the kind of attack he faced today, especially when the coach is throwing him to the wolves with predictable play-calling. Nothing to make OSU think twice about stacking the box and chasing him full throttle.

No need to put Mertz out there at this point, IMO. I'd rather preserve his eligibility for another year than put him out there when the playoffs aren't an option anymore.

Minny uses their receivers the way we should be using ours.

If Fleck doesn't leave for USC or wherever, he will surely surpass Chryst when it comes to recruiting offensive skill players who want to showcase their talent. He already has one of the best dual threat QB recruits in the country coming.

Get ready for a Gopher/Buckeye title game, with Minny playing a lot less scared than we did.

He's played only 2 games. 2 more left.

It’s odd that you’re crediting Fleck for this (who is doing well at a rebuild, no doubt) but Chryst literally went 12-0 over a schedule less **** than Minnesota’s so far. Not only have they played one of the easiest schedules in the country, none of their Big Ten opponents have had their starting QB. 2 of them had the starting QB start but could not finish.

There was no way Wisconsin was winning that game. I’m not saying I love everything about what they did but they kept it to 10-7 and could hope for some “Illinois vs Wisconsin late breaks.” If they tried to play aggressively, they’d have been boat raced by half.

Fleck seems to be trying to be a good WR recruiters but Minnesota so far has lucked out by having a high-end NFL WR from Minneapolis that stayed home. I’m not sure Wisconsin has had that in my lifetime and Minnesota probably won’t again for a long time.

By the way, I do think this is a bit off, but Ohio State vs Minnesota on a neutral field if that is truly the B10 title matchup...

Ohio State -25 is the current Sagarin spread.

Ohio State may lay one egg but OSU is a machine this year. Not a chance that Wisconsin’s well-developed team was staying within 2 scores in Columbus.

I have no idea what happens if Mertz plays Illinois but does anyone seriously think the Badgers stay within 20 points of OSU if Mertz plays in that game? I'm just reading back through the thread after being gone most of the weekend.
