LaFleur honestly strikes me as someone who might feel threatened by a young talented up and comer. He comes off as intelligent, but seems to have confidence swings.

I hope the Packers got this right, but I am very frustrated that LaFleur seemingly only hires “friends”. Also this staff needs a nuclear bomb taken to it. Need new voices in the room, not more holdovers yet again.

I was just coming to post this. I was optimistic about the hire till I read this. It’s incredibly foolish to not give guys their own staffs.

Did he hate all his offensive hires and that's why they succeeded?

I hope this isn't LaFleur just hiring one of his buddies. He already bombed once with Barry.

Buddies with LaFleur and they may keep the entire staff? I'll have an open mind about it, but...

These dudes bounce around and work with so many staffs if you remove all the 'buddies' the list would be pretty small.

LaFleur runs his offense. Of course you'd expect him to hire folks who he trusts to run it his way.

Hiring another buddy buddy DC (and retaining most of his predecessor's coaches) gives me concern that he wanted another yes man reporting to him, rather than a DC who is running his own regime on that side of the ball.

This discussion has always been ridiculous. As if coaches across all sports aren't hiring people they're comfortable with (or god forbid, friends) all the time.

No ****. This is why people accuse the NFL of being an old boys club. If you're only hiring people you know, you aren't giving chances to people who deserve them based on merit.

Besides, it's not just that they're friends that concerns me. It's that Hafley was not on anyone's DC radar (like Barry back then) and that he's retaining all of his predecessor's coaches. This doesn't sound like an inspired hire.

Hell, he might prove me wrong (and hopefully will). I can't pretend that I'm an expert on DCs.

If LaFleur is confident that Hafley's defensive acumen is on par with his own offensively, then I'll take it. LaFleur understands what modern defenses are doing and how to attack them. I trust it's not just a buddy hire.

If true, this is the aspect that is most unsettling in my view. We're talking about a defensive staff and general philosophy that has never significantly been overhauled since the McCarthy/Capers years and desperately is in need of it.

Such a weird quote. Could mean he doesn't want anyone being poached until he fills his staff.
