Probably haven't asked that question because, well, they haven't actually said they're keeping the old staff yet.

All that tweet read like was that they'll all get interviews and they'll go from there. Like calm the hell down. lol

Why do people assume MLF is hiring the coaches and not Gute, his boss?

No ****. This is why people accuse the NFL of being an old boys club. If you're only hiring people you know, you aren't giving chances to people who deserve them based on merit.

Besides, it's not just that they're friends that concerns me. It's that Hafley was not on anyone's DC radar (like Barry back then) and that he's retaining all of his predecessor's coaches. This doesn't sound like an inspired hire.

Hell, he might prove me wrong (and hopefully will). I can't pretend that I'm an expert on DCs.

I agree with this entire post and share being skeptical of this hire. However this hasn't actually been said

Gute isn’t his boss. They’re on equal footing. This is a MLF hire no question

Tbh it’d be sick to coach an NFL team and hire all your good buds. Imagine the group chat.

I, personally, think it's totally logical to think MLF would sabotage his chances at a ring so he can do a solid for a guy he knows. Makes total sense.

Because the coach usually gets to hire his staff.

Ill add that this idea that MLF only hires his "buddies" has always been flat out incorrect. He worked with Barry for a single season, he had never worked with Bisaccia, Mennenga, Pettine, or Hackett prior to hiring them.

As for why Hafley wasn't on anyone's lists we also need to remember that college coaches are very reluctant to let out the idea they are interviewing elsewhere due to recruiting purposes.

I have no idea if this hire is good or bad, just as I would have no idea if any of the several position coaches we interviewed would be any good or not.

Hafley was making $3 million at BC so this hire won't be cheap.

I'm excited for a different approach. Don't think I could take a third coach in a row trying to make the soft-shell Fangio defense work.

Yes, if Lafleur isn't hiring his own assistants then none of this matters....they all need to be fired and that is extremely dysfunctional. Now Gute has to sign off on it, but Lafleur should be in charge of picking his own DC.

I am somewhat intrigued at the potential for a new up-and-coming DC over a retread....but kind of jaded after what happened recently with the Bucks. I do love that it sounds like he allows the DBs to be more aggressive.

True, it's been reported as a possibility, and that possibility does concern me. But it might not happen.

There's got to be a balance of hiring the best possible candidate to give your defense the highest possible ceiling and also being comfortable going to war with that guy. I'm guessing this is what MLF believes to be true with Hafley, and he can't really afford to be wrong again.

A good breakdown of BC's defense under Hafley
