Re: 2024 Packers News, Transactions, Trades - Hafley in as DC

It seems a guy that was about to get a bigger NFL role and decided to go to college, but now is going back to NFL. I am fine with him, no one said any bad things about his coaching, only good things.

As for being a MLF bud, like someone said, everyone is kind of related in this league, you don’t come from nowhere. This guy got a job in the 49ers via same connection and did a great job there, so let’s hope it happens here too.

Also, he isn’t a guy being promoted to DC, he already has HC experience, so he knows how to deal with a bigger group and has proven it. It is a safer choice than a 32-year new coach, for example.

Now it’s time to bring some safety talent though draft and maybe bring Savage back in a cheap deal.

As for assistants, it’s obvious that they weren’t fire everyone just after hiring the new DC, there will be some process around it and it might take some extra weeks to finalize this part.

I dig it.
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.

Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

It’s just weird seeing it in words. ‘Best Friend’ like 3rd grade sleep over playing Madden on a 27” magnavox halfway getting the leftover movie popcorn in the mouths spilling residuals over into the open yearbook name dropping girls …older girls…that might’ve said something nice to them and were definitely do able.

Weird how vivid that seems.

My dream was always that the Jets would can Saleh and LaFleur would swoop in. Alas.

If Dan is on-board, I'm on-board. The one guy I like and respect on ESPN.

No idea if this is article is accurate, but I certainly hope it is: "The anti-Joe Barry: what Jeff Hafley's defense will look like with the Packers"

https://atozsports.com/green-bay/the-anti-joe-barry-what-jeff-hafleys-defense-will-look-like-with-the-packers/

Relatively young, not a proven loser, energetic, creative, and aggressive are all descriptions of Hafley that distinguish him from Barry.

Hafley's hiring will likely mean some changes on the defensive staff. LaFleur has told the assistants they are free to explore other options, a source said, but he probably will have to sit down with Hafley and find out how many coaches he wants to bring in from outside.

His credentials are quite impressive. Like that Shanahan kept him on after they fired most of Chip's staff. Buckeyes defense hasn't been the same since BC poached him. Aggressive press, let the front pin their ears back.

Some of y'all were tripping.

44y/o, HC experience, and I like that he has worked with some elite talent (Revis in college, Sherman in SF), with Sherman singing his praises. Most important to me, Sherman citing he has the reputation as an absolute film hound. I'm sort of not shocked BB didn't get his head coach hire, and to a much lesser extent, Pete Carroll (age-related cognitive declines, at least on the margins, in processing speed, energy, etc. are real, and it seems there may not be a more work intense job than high level NFL coaching if they're doing it right). Also, while I'm sure it's true of a great number of guys, I absolutely dig this is someone who persistently has made his way up the various ladders through hustle. We'll see how he adjusts his mindset and approach from BC to the NFL ranks, but we have a defensive coordinator who is not going to be outworked in the film room, and I absolutely adore that.

On the side piece, the 3/4 vs 4/3, as others have noted, don't think it matters too much, but I personally was hoping for and anticipating a big growth spurt for LVN, and I have the inkling it took Barry and others far to long to discern what LVN excels at (hand on the ground), and this move puts that high draft capital piece in a better position to shine (huge - take advantage of what we have)... Likewise, I think it opens up the door for a bigger Gary season.

Finally, again, all speculative at this point, but everything reads as this being a tremendous opportunity for Jaire and Stokes to getting back to what we thought they were or could be. I'm biased, but I love press coverage.

As an aside - my word, it seems like some of you (understandably) have been traumatized by years of defensive ineptitude. I'm catching up this morning, and when I read that AJ Dillon tweet, my first instinct was, "That's just media talk, spreading love, and making it seem like everyone is friends/connected." No more than that, and I was zero stun when I saw Tom's tweet noting the relationship between HC and Lafleur was greatly exaggerated.

On the weird/quirky note for those hating the move - how has no one commented he and lafleur are both 44 and look alike?? C'mon, pick apart that to make me giggle (I'm on the opposite end - hoping we finally have the tireless film hound, creative schemer counterpoint to Matt on the defensive side of the ball - though I look forward to a puff piece where they get their hair and beards trimmed together - bonus points if Haf adopts Lafleur's beard style).

Today is a good day. I'm feeling rambly - Raheem Morris is a great coach. There is a seasoning process and bumps in the road. I'm closer to 40 now than 30, but Raheem being 33 played a role in his failure in TB - I wonder if there will ever be an analytics piece to age correlating with coaching success, bearing in mind phase of life [when coaches are most likely to start getting married, possibly multiple young kids at home, etc] - I'd tend to guess that 38-54 window may be peak. GB interviewed some outstanding young coordinators, some of whom likely will go on to greatness, some won't, but I'm pretty certain most who go on to greatness have a flop or two they still need to work through/learn from. Plus, I doubt it's ever looked at, but there may be a sociopathy piece where willingness/ability to completely put one's family lif aside ties to success (making a giant piece, but I could guess this is a secret BB factor).

So basically that original report was wrong on both fronts? They weren't friends AND Hafley gets to pick his own staff. Lol

To leave a head coaching job in college for a D coordinator job in the NFL he must feel like it will be a springboard into a head coaching gig in the NFL. Hopefully he's right because it would mean he was successful here.

A rough draft for our current depth chart in a 4-3

A couple of interesting sidebars (to me): Jones, Smith are in. Newman!!! too. No Dillon, Savage, Owens, Runyan, Degura. Oh, I know this is just whiteboard stuff just for frame of reference, but interesting coming from Ingall's

It's just the guys currently under contract. Anyone who is a free agent isn't listed.
