Re: Later Bielema - Going to Arkansas.
Bob Diaco and Charlie Strong are two other guys we should be calling ASAP, especially if Chryst is for real about staying at Pitt.
Although around this time last year he was still saying he was committed to UW. Who knows.

His older bro was good pals with Bret. They were juniors or seniors when the guy I was talking to was a frosh.
Story 1 was that younger bro was moving in. Bret and older bro packed up his pickup truck and drove it over to the dorms on move-in day. Basically, as they drove by the girls' dorm, BB yelled to the people moving in, "DADS, BETTER SAY GOODBYE NOW BECAUSE WE'RE GONNA **** EM WHEN YOU LEAVE."
Story 2 was that he obtained BB's phone number from his brother. After an Iowa game where we had a tough loss, he started texting BB (Bret apparently had deleted his number) acting as if he was some random chick that had met him at the bar last night, consoling him over the loss. Apparently he took it hook, line, sinker.
So...he was a college football player?

I'm on Twitter all day; I know that the guy is largely a punchline in many respects. Who gives a ****? So was Les Miles not a year and a half ago.
I don't mind seeing him gone because I don't think he had a lot to do with what's made Wisconsin a power in the last twenty years, namely the offensive line, the runningbacks and, lately, the innovative offensive system.
Hopefully the buy-out isn't a dealstopper with Chryst. But if it isn't, I don't think Wisconsin will miss much of a beat with whoever it is they bring in.
Lots of coaches have tried running a college football program based mainly on running the ball and playing sound defense, yet have failed badly when compared to the winning which both Alvarez and Bielema accomplished. They weren't running some rarely tried before offense. Having a plan/goal for how a coach wants to build his program is vastly easier than actually being able to accomplish it. Lauded Kirk Ferentz has tried building his program largely the same way, yet hasn't had success like Alvarez or Bielema.
Plus, for all of the focus which gets put on the identity of Wisconsin football, that being big O-Lines and running the ball in a power scheme, another big reason both Alvarez and Bielema had numerous 10 plus win seasons and six Rose Bowl berths compared to every school except OSU is those two coaches also built solid to good defenses during those seasons. At the same time, a lot of the other Big 10 schools had defenses getting destroyed on a to consistent basis.
Both coaches also put together coaching staffs that along with the head coach consistently developed non-elite talent overall better than any school and coaches in the Big Ten over their tenures. I say that even slightly above OSU only because they have so many recruiting advantages, do get better recruits, yet UW in many ways has held their own against the Buckeyes considering those talent advantages.
Lastly, both UW coaches did a better job than the vast majority of other Big 10 coaches at finding undervalued recruits which fit what Alvarez/Bielema wanted, and then developed those players into teams which have had more success than any program besides Ohio St. during those years. Sure, Barry very well could end up making another good hire, i sure hope he does. I just don't buy that the odds are very slim that the the program could slip noticeably, regardless of who gets hired. History simply says so. Way to many programs with some recent history of success to a long tradition of success have nosedived significantly after an AD make a new head coach hire which looked/hoped to bring a continuation of winning, but instead way more losing resulted.
Hell, besides teams i listed earlier, look at Colorado. The were rolling for awhile. Destroyed Alvarez twice. A few bad coaching changes later they are 1-11 and getting trounced weekly. It only takes one wrong hire for any AD to cause significant harm.

Agreed, they were just kinda funny. To add, story #2 happened like 4 or 5 years ago, not when BB was a player.

Don't really follow college football much, so maybe a stupid question. Why do the Badgers and their fans always set their sights on the Rose Bowl and nothing higher? Homer was raging on 1250 this evening that a Rose Bowl is great, and if you want a national title, go to the SEC

Re: Later Bielema - Going to Arkansas.
RP, you're entitled to your opinion and I was not trying to pry something out of you or force you to tell your reasons. If you want him fired because of things you've heard and you think he's a big enough douche that you have a hard time cheering for the program, you're entitled to your opinion. It's valid. But you make an important distinction that most of the extreme BB haters will not make, and that is that you don't like the move from a football perspective. I'm not saying that my view has to be the right view, but that is not something that many will admit. I've talked to many fans from other teams that think it's quite funny that our head coach was having his head called for after two trips to the Rose Bowl. And an 8-5 season? Gosh, that should and could never happen at Wisconsin. I was not trying to pick out your post specifically; it just so happened to contain two points of contention among those calling for BB to be run out of town. You talk to a majority of these fans and tell them that Wisconsin pays their assistant coaches 7th lowest in the B10 and they'll just stare at you dumbfounded. Illinois and Iowa top us we barely top Indiana. This is just one thing I am picking out, but my point is that people hated BB and it was easy to just blame everything on him, even if it was something out of his control or not his fault. And then when something went right, clearly there was some other reason for that.
You've made it clear that is not your opinion on the matter, and that is fine. I was not trying to back you into a corner. Just sharing my two cents, because I think they needed to be shared.
All that aside now, I certainly don't think he was some tremendous coach. Of course there are better coaches we could have here; I wasn't in love with BB. The problem is getting them to come here to coach. If we wind up with a better coach after this, tremendous. I'm just not holding my breath. As El Dude pointed out, the grass is not always greener. Just remember everyone, at the end of the day, we're going to our third straight Rose Bowl. Hope the next coach can live up to the expectations that have been set lately, and hopefully they can hang onto our recruits. Too bad we can't have one in place for 30 days - it's going to be an uphill battle.

It's not that we don't set our sights higher, it's just that you have to have a lot of things go your way to play in the BCS Championship with the current system. If you win the Big Ten, you go to the Rose Bowl, a highly respected bowl game.
The notion that BB has a better shot at a championship at Arkansas vs. here though is pretty ignorant. He will have to play Bama, LSU and A&M every year. Good luck with that, Bret.

I knew you weren't trying to corner me, but thanks for clarifying anyways.

I totally get why you felt that stuff needed to be said, and I don't disagree with it at all-- in fact there is nothing in that post I do not agree with. This situation can turn out very good or very bad, depending on the next HC choice. Lots of good options out there, I sure hope Barry can make the right call.
BTW, Walk The Moon was freaking awesome. Best show I've been to in awhile.

Re: Later Bielema - Going to Arkansas.
You have to go undefeated to go to the National Championship (especially in the Big 10). The Badgers definitely were trying to do that by avoiding tough non-conference games -- a strategy that I like and many have argued on here with me about. They never were able to accomplish that because we normally lose one or two to a talented team in the Big 10. Some of those were BB's fault, some of those were the fact that we just haven't had the talent of the OSUs and Michigans in some of those years.

The burden of proof is on you here. I'm guessing your case is pretty weak. But to condone wanting a guy gone that has never finished outside the top 4 in the Big Ten or missed the tourney, and has basically established a top 16 national program while running it cleanly, and has his best recruiting classes coming in soon, is an amazing comment.
