Another Gute-and-drafting comment: IIRC, Savage was considered a good value pick at the time. Generally considered a good choice here on this site and elsewhere. He got off to a pretty good start, got injured and then arguably never turned the corner after that.

Just to understand it better, let's take Preston as an example. His cap hit is 19,750, if we cut him we still need to pay him 7,250 and we get a relief on 12,500. If we extend him, let's say to a 21,750 / 3-year deal, so 7,250 per year, it's the same thing in terms of cap, right? We get the relief and the player secures some extra years in a good deal (7 per year).

Am I right about it or there are other things to take into account?

Later round picks need to focus on ST ability/potential.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

The key thing is we have to make great decisions around who we pay / keep.

Last year for me Zadarius was the guy we had to cut / trade. His replacement was already on the roster and had we moved on last year his cap number for this year would be zero. The problem with getting creative and keeping him now is it just makes next years problem worse - we have to move on from Z his money is spoken for (Jenkins, Gary, Jaire).

I still think trading Jaire is the right thing to do this off-season. I don't love it I'm just a realist - we can probably get a high 1 (or more) in a trade for him and that money freed up from not paying him can go towards a number of other places. In simple terms, would you rather of Jaire or Adams and a high 1st round pick?

Jaire

Yeah I'd say if you ranked all the GMs draft picks since Gute took over hed be in the top 25%. He's generally drafted well.

Gutes got a bunch of home runs in the draft and a bunch of strike outs. We need some singles.

Lots of fanbases are tired of hitting singles because their GM doesn't have the courage to swing big. Off the top of my head(I don't think you can strike out on anyone drafted after the 3rd round);

HR - Gary, Alexander, Jenkins
Triple - Stokes (just basing on what I think he will become)
Double - MVS, Runyan, AJ Dillon, Myers, Lazard(UDFA), Njiman (UDFA), Tonyan (UDFA?)
Single - St. Brown, Oren Burks, Savage, Newman, Slaton, Hill, Barnes (UDFA)
Strike Out - Josh Jackson, Jace, Degaura (I could see him improving next season), Amari Rodgers
On Deck - Jordan Love

This list is obviously up for debate, but I think when you add in the UDFA type guys, he has found a lot of really useful value out there. I'd bet this is probably as good or better than any GM that had similar drafting positions the last 4 years.

I feel like we all laughed at Big Mac because he absolutely LOVED 6'2 240 pound players, like as many as we could find a way to get on the roster. Feel like we need to start dedicating some draft capital to identifying a dynamic returner and guys that can elevate our ST specifically.

Feels like it has been a while since we had any kind of standout on that unit, maybe Janis as a gunner?

I mean, how many "strikeouts" are we even talking about here? I have:

Sternberger
Josh Jackson
JK Scott
J'Mon Moore?

Even if you want to throw Amari Rodgers in there (fair because I think he's already done), that's really the list in his entire 4 draft classes as a GM. If you're gonna name guys picked in the 6th-7th round that didn't stick on the roster, then you're reaching. That's almost always a crapshoot.

Is Jarrett Bush still in football shape? :)

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!-H.S.T.

I think it was Kuhn that did a ST breakdown on Twitter and in two tweets immediately proved himself as the best ST coach that could be in GB in two decades.

Why is Maurice Drayton still employed by the Packers?

At this point, I'm telling myself it's because they want to fill the vacant spots first before addressing the special teams. But I'm starting to think they might give Drayton one more crack at it... :(

Yeah I'm starting to get worried about that too but at the same time you just can't not replace him..... You just can't?.........................

The guy we should have hired if we paid him for what he wanted, Rizzi, is available since Payton stepped down

This right here is what should happen. We might have a ring or two by now if we’d been able to land this guy the first time around.

A big one is Kevin King since a lot of us wanted Watt. Talk about a a big blunder. Not the same gm but.

While we are blaming our current GM for strikeouts before he was GM, I am pissed we drafted Tony Mandarich over Barry Sanders. When is Gute going to right this wrong???

I’m amazed there’s people bashing Gute. All gm’s make mistakes, but he’s had more hits than misses
