He's probably my guy at 14 since Barkley won't be around.

I don't this implies it was a sense of entitlement. The reporting there implies that it may have just been an accurate assessment of his athletic ability. I concede, though that he may not have worked as hard at prepping for the combine as he should have.

There was also reports of him "loafing" around when coaches asked him to do things. I think he drops 2-3 rounds tbh.

Calvin Ridley had a nice combine too. I dont think he's special by any means but a true solid guy who I think ends up in CHI.

Did i miss Josh Jacskon beating his GF or something? Every time a new mock comes out he's lower and lower?

From Tony Pauline's combine updates:

- According to teams, Leighton Vander Esch has been crushing interviews and continues to impress people. After weighing in at 256 pounds and completing 20 reps on the bench, the Boise State linebacker is hoping to run under 4.7 in the 40-yard dash. Truth be told, anything at or below 4.75 would be a great time. I’ve been told the Green Bay Packers are very high on Vander Esch and that he won’t get past the Pittsburgh Steelers in Round 1.

Also, Shaquem Griffin running a 4.38 40 is, well, insane. That time for a LB is off the charts.

Griffin is kind of amazing. If he wasn't one handed, he'd be a top 5 prospect.

Roquan Smith running a 4.52 might have pushed him out of our range in the first round.

Apparently, he and teammate Carter have been red flagged medically by some teams due to past injury history.

Griffin is also on the light side for a LB at 227. It's about the same weight as Joe Thomas.

Seems like another situation where if he falls into your lap, it is time to tag a draft pick on a guy like that. We have already passed on Jack and Foster for the same type of thing. He is, by all accounts, a great leader on and off the field. He has special speed sideline to sideline, and great instincts. If he is there, I will be disappointed if we don't pick him. The only other option would be if Chubb was somehow within striking distance. Unfortunately, I think he goes #3.

4.43 speed, with probably more impressive long speed, goes a long way to opening up defenses. He is a great option along with Gesicki if we could move down a little bit. If all of the great defensive options are there, both players make a ton of sense.

Why are we still using Rueben Foster as a hindsight example of passing on red-flagged guys? Availability is important and if anything, I'm crossing off guys that are medical red flags in the 1st round because this is likely the highest draft pick we'll have for the rest of Aaron Rodgers' career. Need to draft a healthy, plug and play starter with that pick.

I'd include Jack as a guy not to lament on too at this point. Clark has the look of a stud on the D line and doesn't have degenerative health issues

More from Pauline:

As we previewed the past week, Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch knocked it out of the park. While he wasn’t the fastest in the 40, his 4.65 mark was better than scouts expected and was a tremendous mark for the 256-pound linebacker. His 39.5-inch vertical jump ranked second among linebackers, while his 10-foot-4-inch broad was a top-four mark. His 6.88 three-cone and 4.15 short shuttle were top-five marks. Vander Esch was one of just four linebackers who ran the long shuttle, and his time of 11.57 was just .05 behind that of Josey Jewell, who clocked the fastest time. I mentioned that Vander Esch would not get past the Pittsburgh Steelers, who own the 28th selection, and I’m now hearing that Vander Esch could be drafted by the Green Bay Packers with the 14th pick. The Philadelphia Eagles would love to add Vander Esch with the last pick of the first round but have come to the conclusion he won’t be available.

The blurb on Carter and Smith was this:

Lorenzo Carter and Roquan Smith of Georgia both had terrific combine workouts. Carter, who I’ve always believed was a first-round talent, ran under 4.5 in the 40, bested everyone in his group with a broad jump of 10-feet-10-inches and posted a vertical jump of 39.5 inches. Roquan Smith ran 4.51 and will do the rest of the drills at his pro day. I have been informed both players were red-flagged medically by a number of teams due to past injury history. While I don’t expect the medical evaluations to be a drag on the draft stock of Carter and Smith, it is something likely to be part of the debate on draft day when each player is being considered.

Um, Denzel Ward ran a 4.32.

That's, um, fast.

Pick 14 starting to look real real good for us.

Love to get him. If the Bears get Landry, he could slip into a range where a reasonable trade-up is possible.

The Seminoles' gifted and versatile safety recorded a 40-yard dash of 4.47 seconds (ninth-best among combine safeties) at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, along with a 40-inch vertical jump (sixth-best of all DBs) and an 11-foot broad jump (fifth-best among DBs).

Also had 21 on the bench.

I truly think Vander Esch ends up being our pick and I'm completely fine with that.

Return to Green Bay Packers
