Re: Packers News, Transactions, Trades - Morgan Injures Shoulder
A rookie being counted on as a starter at a position he's never played, missing at least a week of practice and missing getting reps with the starters in a preseason game, isn't nothing.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

When it comes to the idea of bringing in players off the street it absolutely is nothing.MickeyDavis wrote:A rookie being counted on as a starter at a position he's never played, missing at least a week of practice and missing getting reps with the starters in a preseason game, isn't nothing.
Is it something to monitor? Sure. But God damn guys this is still football. Don't act like a player (yes even a rookie) missing a week of training camp is massive. It happens all the time on every team in the league.
Let's not pretend we don't see this every year

They bring in camp bodies as needed to keep some consistency in reps for the other guys, and to cover contingencies. Jenkins gets vet rest routinely for practice, and I'd bet he doesn't play more than a quarter against Cleveland. It may be a good opportunity for Rhyan and Newman to show they're worth a spot on the 53, but both have been pretty iffy to this point in their careers. Its not a panic move to kick the tires on alternatives

O-line depth is a legit concern of mine at this point. How many guys do we have that we know for sure we can count on? Four? (all the starters except Rhyan)

3 starters I'm confident in(Jenkins, Tom, Walker)
1 starter I'm meh on(Myers)
1 starter I'm hopeful on(Morgan)
1 guy I'm comfortable with as depth(Rhyan)
And then a bunch of dudes who have never played who I have zero idea on if they are any good or not(Telfort, Monk, Glover, C. Jones, Tenuta)
Lastly 2 guys who I'm actively hoping don't make the 53(Dillard & Newman)
Coach Drew: "Milwaukee has always been a team that I have been intrigued by. When we played them, they were a tough team for us to play. Although we did beat them all four times"

Re: Packers News, Transactions, Trades - Morgan Injures Shoulder
This was a fantasy blurb on an ESPN article but it relates to the WR core, which MLF said had five guys he was comfortable giving a ton of snaps to.
OK, for fantasy you probably want to know about the wide receivers. LaFleur has five guys he believes are pretty interchangeable -- Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, Jayden Reed and Bo Melton. The Packers didn't have a 100-yard game from a receiver until Week 17 of last season, and it was surprisingly Melton who finally did it. (Reed did it the following week.)
The Packers still believe the 6-foot-4 Watson is the guy who profiles differently from the others in terms of size and speed, and that defenses play them differently when Watson is on the field out of respect for his ability to take the top off the D. And in an attempt to change some things with how he has dealt with his ongoing hamstring issues, the Packers sent him (and cornerback Eric Stokes) to Madison, Wisconsin, this offseason to work with a specialist. They think they have it figured out, but we'll see.
The action item here, though, is this: If there's a Packers receiver you want in fantasy, I think it's Doubs. Multiple people at Packers camp told me Doubs is the guy who has had the most consistently good showing so far and has separated himself as Love's go-to guy in any situation. Any of these guys could conceivably help your fantasy team in a given week, but if you're looking for consistent week-to-week production, it sounds like Doubs might be the one to target.

Re: Packers News, Transactions, Trades - Morgan Injures Shoulder
I wonder how young drafted receivers will feel coming into this Packers offense?
I imagine at least three of their top six WRs won't be getting second contracts with the Packers. Maybe even four or five. If the Packers are confident in their system and ability to find targets for Love, it makes sense to cycle through WRs and only pay the special outliers. Watson would seem like that guy but he's also been injured a ton.
But back to the original question, I'm not sure how much I would love being one of the current WRs or being a potential draftee coming to the Packers. Sure, you get to play with an elite QB. But the system as it's set up right now is one meant to spread the ball around. It's unlikely any one WR is going to put up huge numbers.

I'm interested in watching Evan Williams and Xavier McKinney.
If we have two legit safeties this defense will be a force.

It sounds like Bullard has looked pretty good also.

For our current group there's such a wide range of outcomes on how things could play out but I agree it could get interesting if everyone (especially Watson) stays healthy and available. Someone is probably going to feel like they're getting shortchanged. If that's how it ends up playing out it falls under the category of a good problem and I also think it's likely to be more of a future problem than any sort of real problem this season.
As far as a draftee, unless we're talking about a truly elite prospect that's being drafted with a top 10 pick or something I really don't there's anything to be concerned about there.

The last thing a rookie WR is going to worry about is the ball being spread around too much. That's a good thing for a rookie.
3rd or 4th year guy that's done well and looking for a contract, sure.

Re: Packers News, Transactions, Trades - Morgan Injures Shoulder
Barnwell likes the Packers this season.
5. Green Bay Packers
Chances to make the playoffs: 65.2% (FPI's 10th-best odds)
I'd argue that the FPI probably underestimates the Packers for a couple of reasons. One is the sheer amount of youth on this roster. The average Green Bay snap last season came from a player who was 25.7 years old, the youngest mark for any team. That's a rare feat; going back through 2007, the only other teams with an average age under 26 to post a winning record were the 2018 Cowboys and 2023 Lions. The Packers have a lot of talent approaching or entering their peak seasons and improving in the process.
One of those players is Jordan Love, whose only real recent comparable in terms of usage happens to be Aaron Rodgers. After sitting for three seasons, Love finally got his chance to start. He was inconsistent early, but from Week 11 onward, he led the league in QBR (75.4) and expected points added per dropback (0.18) while throwing 18 touchdown passes against just one interception. Love will probably throw more than one interception every two months in 2024, but this is pretty straightforward: If the Packers get anything close to that version of Love, they're going to be an elite team, especially if new coordinator Jeff Hafley is able to improve an often-frustrating defense.
There are variables in play. Second-half breakouts don't always repeat the following year for young quarterbacks (see: Lawrence, Trevor). Hafley is installing a single-high scheme that might not work in a league that has shifted toward more split-safety coverages. The schedule is going to be more difficult. For all the talent the Packers have on offense, it's unclear who their top wide receivers are and what their best offensive line combination looks like, and it might take time to figure those things out. Having too many promising receivers and linemen is a problem just about every other team would love to endure.

I suppose including the tweet I was referencing would have added some much needed context.

Nate Tice with some nice comments for the Packers defensive line at the 53:00 mark.
